All,

I am working on trying to model a rock cliff that characters will be climbing on. My characters in design are stylized so to contrast them I would like the Cliff to be as realistic as possible. To be efficient in making this cliff should I recreate every nook and cranny by hand or just do a texture displacement on a surface that is some what like my reference just in low polys?

picture of cliff is attached.

I'd use Mud or Z to sculpt it and then try different SubD levels in my rendering apps with the remainig details in Displacement/Normal Maps and chose the one that gives the best visuals at acceptable render times.
