Hi, I'm new to this site, and relatively new to 3D modeling as well. I'm working with LightWave 7.5 at the moment on a model of the Nissan 350Z.

This is my second model, and seeing how some people here have done some awesome work on various cars, I'm wondering if anyone can help a n00b... -_-;

First, the WIP images:

The car was modeled up to this point first using spline cages to get the basic shape, then some heavy usage of stenciling for the details, including the panel lines.

My questions:

- What is the best way to detail a car in LightWave? Stenciling seems to produce huge amounts of what someone told me is referred to as "puckering". Is there a better method?

- How do I achieve that super-smooth look? Subdivision using smooth and/or metaform? I've tried both, but they don't seem to be able to get the job done completely.

- Any other general tips on car modeling in LW?

I'll try to think up more questions along the way. Any comments/tips would be appreciated ^_^;

Just leave car into SubDs (subPatches) mode and it'll be smooth as hell :).

That does seem to solve the smoothing issue, but it creates some odd geometry and "unwanted" rounding in some detail areas. Maybe I should go back to the basic shape, turn to subpatches, then remodel the details?

What would be a good way to create panel lines? How does everyone else do it? Stencils?

Yes in SubDs mode you will have smooth surface :). Ading geometr yin right places (properly) will give you srhap edges and creases where is neede.

Maybe it would be best for you to try look at my tutorial how to model cars :) ?
