Hi Pipen,
I had to go through the same thing. What I was told was, "How much is your time worth?". I have seen jobs in Los Angeles that pay $1,000 to $1,500 a week for artists. So going off of that tends to be $200 a day.
If you are looking at a freelance job, look at how long it will take you to complete it. Usually the client is pretty open about the budget or how much they are willing to spend. Try to make sure they mention money first. Sometimes their budget isn't that great, so you have to ask yourself if you can do it for the money that they offer. It's also about level of detail. I have done a simple character model for $500. I have done a higher detail one for $800. It really depends on all of the things I have mentioned before. Sometimes you just have to pay the bills. I had a friend that built, textured, and rigged a ginger bread man for $1,000. Lately that has been my weekly fee.
I hope this helps.
