View Full Version : Presentation
Halogen 09-15-2003, 03:55 PM Ok, ive got a car modelled and all, now the question is "how am i going to render it now? In a composed scene, simplistic? Im not actually sure!"
Basically, i want to know how you would present a car model. This also applies to any other model. Presentation is extremely important, i just dont seem to have it down pat. Any ideas?

not to sure what you mean here.
do you mean how do i composite it into my scene/photo backround?
or do you mean what type of setting should i put it in...eg driveway, rotating stage, showroom?
or non of the above...i wanna know how to render the damn thing...come on fling...sort your s**t out!!! heh heh.
cheers matey...just so we don't go off on a tangent here.

I think it depends much on the model itself. I would
present an oldtimer different than a spacecar. Best is
you show us your model.

I'm still a fan of null-rooms, white background and floor. Doesn't necessarily have to be white of course.
As for rendering, radiosity still gives the best results, but ambient occlusion is a lot faster. This enables you to do animations with it.
Check my tutorial:

Of course a realistic photo-composit is the CG holy grail but might not be the best way to present your model.

yea you guys are on the right track. White scene like harry said, or composite in a photo. I like how your image turned out handige_harrie! Below is my car, might help.
I know its not perfect, but its all i can do on my computer (p3 500)

superb model!
I would tweak with the shadow a little, because it shows artifacts and is too diffuse for the size of the car.
Might only be the the shadowmap-size.
Olli
Really superb model. I think you should use soft shadows, with more transparency.
My other addition would be to change the platform (floor) colour to light yellow.

Thanks for the positive comments on the model guys. I might change the shadow map. Are you guys saying that the scene it is in is adequate?
Would a basic render like this be ok? Or should i give a go at composing it into a scene. Plain white room/environment? Or showroom (not too sure how to do this one). That is the major focus i need. Thanks anyway :)
Harry, thanks for that tut, ive read through a bit of it and it looks interesting. Looks like a lot of playing around and with the speed of my computer, i think it would probably be easier just letting the radiosity render go overnight. Might give it a go later though.
Any other tips/helpful hints/suggestions/tutorials out there?
Thanks in advance!

If you decide to go w/ the composite which is IMO the most rewarding but also the most difficult - this is the best tutorial so far on compositing HDR + car in C4D:
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54191&highlight=chevy
It's not very clear, the language is pretty rough but I managed to follow it out and I'm not a native speaker - but the chevy composite looks very good. I've mailed the author about a complete tutorial (he mentions it in that thread) - but we'll have to wait and see. I'm rendering a car composite as we speak with this technology and so far it looks pretty damn good!

hey thanks Peoples. I was reading that earlier today, might actually give it a try. Link us to the results of your render, i would be interested to see the results :)!

This is a crappy jpeg - and the car doesn't fit very well, I used a homemade HDRI from that same place where the BG is taken. You can actually see those crome balls they have here - they're real and excellent for some homemade hdri's! I just have to tweak the car's material to get it fit in the scene better - and of course up the radiosity settings.
But the fake floor did it's job very jood I think - just follow the tips in that thread!

your results great. I dont really understand the steps though. It sorta confuses me. Perhaps you could summarise how to implement it for me? if so i would be extremely helpful.

Well - basically:
I had a normal jpeg picture as the background I wanted to put the car in (no mirrorball etc. - I just took a shot of the place I wanted my car to be). Then you need a HDRimage for the lightning and reflection.
I had a sky object with the hdri material applied to it and a compositing tag on it with only seen by rays and GI checked.
I placed a background object in my scene and applied a material with my bgpic in the color channel to it. It should automatically be frontal-projected. Then I placed a disc where the floor should be and made it big enough to "catch" a shadow. For the disc (floor) material:
Color: the same picture as in the bg
Alpha: SLA projector with bhodiNut gradient set to 2D circular going from white->black
Set the projectors mode to flat, and size and rotation fields: make a new material (the default), apply it flat to the disc, rotate it so that it is flat on the disc-> choose fit to object from object manager. Copy the textures size and rotation digits on paper and open the projector again -> set the same numbers in the projectors size and rotation fields.
The discs material should also be frontal projected when applied to the disc.
Set this disc material's saturation to 0% in the materials illumination tab. You might also uncheck the generate GI - and also from your cars paint shader too (generate GI). Give the disc a compositing tag - and untick cast shadows.
Thats it!
THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FROM THIS THREAD - I DID NOT INVENT THE TECHNIQUE!
