How much materials-and-textures work do you do "in comp" vs. "in the render" ... of what nature, and why?

In other words: to what extent do you generate UV-maps etc. and use this to attach materials and/or textures to the objects after 3D rendering has taken place?

Let's assume for the sake of discussion that the scene consists entirely of 3D elements with no requirement for matchmoving, integration with a live-action plate and so on.

Anyone?

you shouldn't re-apply material in comp. its slow and you will get problems with overlapping objects.

UV passes are useful for quick fixes on a portion of the image and for other things like patching deforming geometry.

then you run into problems with semi transperant objects and motion blur and much more.

In any 'real' scenario you would want to let the renderer do the majority of the heavy lifting and leave comp to do things that can be done quickly and eifficently in those apps.

I'd be interested to know where there might be situations where, e.g.[/], surfaces are left devoid of material (or other effects that come to mind), [i]specifically so that they would be introduced in the composite stages. Pointers to external links that discuss this would be welcome.
