Hello,

Its been a while since I last used 3ds Max for an animation project at university. However, I've got the 3ds Max itch back again! My question to you all is....what is the best place to start if I wanted to model a modern formula one car?....

What tutorials, books, websites etc do you recommend? I have searched the internet for various tutorials relating to this type of model and the few I have found aren't very detailed. If any of you can help to point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Incidently, once I have created my model, I'd be interested in creating a detailed community model to further my own project and ideas.

Cheers guys, I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Howdy,

I think the best place to start would be with box modeling or even my preferred method of using planes and building off of them. Granted, a specific F-1 tutorial may not be available - but once you have the technique down, then applying those principles to your chosen subject should work.

Couple sources come to mind:

1) Digital-Tutors Training - Automotive Modeling in 3ds Max 58 lessons over 4 CDs.
http://www.digitaltutors.com/09/training.php?cid=107&pid=3560

2) PDF called:
:: Tutorial - Boxmodelling a car ::
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=156460

3) 3D Total has many tuts on modeling a car. One in particular is a 4 part series.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the advice! The major problem I invisage with a project like this is getting the blueprints as starting base. F1 being as it is is a notoriously secretive sport so aside from pictures with car livery and a the occasional top down sketch which I've found this might be the issue. I will persevere however!

Need some blueprints arrrrrrggghhh!

Cheer for your help though,

M

I dunno how much experience you have with hard surfaces, but starting with a solid foundation is key:

Clicked on images got a slew of them to check out.

Hope that helps,

Hey,

Yeah I typed that in and many permutations of that into google images. I've got a 2010 spec williams top down blueprint but aside from that I've not found a side, rear or front view. I found this website from clicking on one of the images and following it to the website:

Seems like this guy did it from "eye modelling". Pretty impressive. I wonder if just using actual photos for blueprints may be workable. I'm just as happy doing an amalgamation of various 2010 cars to form my own realistic one. Might be more interesting doing it that way as well.

I'm currently working through the Digital Tutors - Automotive Modeling in 3ds Max video series on you tube. Its actually very useful.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions so far!
