Hi,
I've read somewhere here in this forum someone saying that the most of studios keep the average rendering time in production under 10 minutes. If someone know the thread please tell me.
I'd like to know also, if 30 hours is reasonable rendering time for a production in cinema?

Some studios do have several 30 hours per frame shots, some even more. I guess it all comes down to how many rendering nodes you have. If you have 500 rendering nodes and your frames are taking 30 hours then you will have a little over 20 seconds of footage after 30 hours. Is this too little or good enough? That will be up to your production schedule.

I do believe 30 hours is a LOT!!. but 10 minutes might be too little. YOU must find a balance between rendering time and image complexity. I mean if the shot is too complicated to get done on TIME, then go back to the drawing board and see how can you get your shot done IN time.

Personally I always try to keep my frames bellow 10 minutes, since I dont have a large render farm and my requirements are not those of production in Cinema.

btw sometimes it's less timeconsuming to do something in post

At Redrover Studios (we do broadcast commercials), I allow up to 2-3 hours per frame. But this is the worst case scenario. Usually, most of our renders end up being approx. 30 mins. This is, of course, with a high quality renderer (not scanline).

The everage rendering time turn around 2 hours per frame (all layer) in 3k (3072x2304). It also depend on the compromise you can make between the deadline and the quality.
Here we use maya and we have to produce 45 min relief ( two cameras ) per year.
