So I figured it would be a good idea to learn how to use fur and how to render it out properly using Mental Ray (or software if need be)... but I am now at a roadblock as I do not know how to render the fur in depth passes or shadow passes or anything that requires a custom shader other than the default fur shader.

I tried directly applying a surface shader to the fur itself, but obviously that did not work.... I then tried to plug a depth ramp into the base color and tip color of the fur feedback node, but that also does not work.

I am wondering if there is a simple way to render out fur into passes or if I will have to suck it up and fudge most of the passes in post.

Thanks for your help guys!

puppet's shaders work well with passes, take a look at p_megaTK also
