View Full Version : How can I get an extruded spline to be solid" so I can see it from both sides"
Iguiniz.X. 05-24-2002, 04:30 PM I made the roof a spline then I extruded them in editble mesh.
I know that I can flip normals but that doesn't help as you can see in the image below. Eighter way I can see through some parts of the structure.
Same happends if I stand in the house I can see through the walls.
how can this be done so I have a solid mass. ( no peeking through things.)
Can this be chanced with the shapes I've made know or do I have to start all over and do it in a other way. if so please explain. Maybe PM or mail me.
Thanks in advantage

You can look inside the house and see that there is no wall on the left backside. It has a same wall as the richt front side but you can look through it. This is what I would like to solve.
That you can see it from both sides.

Just go to your material editor and check the 2 sided check box at the top just below the preview sphere's on the material you have assigned to it.

There are a couple of things that you can do to fix this problem.
1) Apply a material with the 2-sided option checked. This will work but won't provide any depth to the element. now your walls will have 2 sides, but still be 2D becasue they have no depth.
2) Use the ultra-handy Solidify modifier written by Terralux (Andrey Zmievski)
Solidify is a modifer plugin that takes your surfaces and makes them solid. An easier way to describe it would be to say that it does extrusion along vertex normals. No more wrestling with extrusion or double sided materials, Solidify makes it a snap to give your surfaces thickness, with as many segments as you need.

the 2 sided check box is under the "shader basic parameters"

visualboo :
Thanks a lot. Yes I found it and it worked but as Taoizm
says the object won't get any depth.
And I didn't use a materiaal on the shape. BUT it worked.
Taoizm:
Thanks a lot man but how do I install the plugin. were do I have to put it and do I have to chance something in my Max ini file?

Solidify is a pretty handfull and easy plugin to use. Just place it's Solidify.dlm file in ../3dsmax/plugins folder and that's it! Then it will work as a modified, it will be one of the last in the list, check it out.
And I agree with Taoizm, it will be the best solution!
Cheers!

Thanks 3Dmadness. I see it worked
and yes it is the best way.
Now I found out why things went wrong
I first made it a editable spline and then a editable mesh which just doesn't work

Thanks

Ahh, I see what you were going after now :)
"Now I found out why things went wrong

I dont really use solidify and I just remembered why. It tweaks the mesh. Try it on a plain ol box. Create a box>delete 1 face>apply solidify modifier>adjust the amount>rotate around the box so you can see along the edges. Does it look all crooked to you too? Maybe it's just me. Instant "surreal" box :D :D
You could just make a cylinder and in a length wise viewport, tweak the shape. OR... you could keep the object you have and use the cap polygons function. OR... you could just duplicate edges in "poly" mode like the video I attached.
solidify/edit poly video - 600kb (http://www.visualboo.addr.com/movies/helpers/2 sided.avi)
I hope that helps. :)

He thanks for all your help man,
It worked out great. And if you want you can check my challange and see it yourself. --> Link below ( dua!)
I don't know but I can't see the vid. Is it because I need div.X.
or something else?
Then the last question how do you make those vid's? It is a realy handy way to explain and leanrn things.
P.S.
I.ve seen the effect of soldify and your right about that but I just added 0.1 so it makes no difference. But better do it right the first time.

Never mind,
I had to download div.X. once in my life so I'll go and do that a.s.a.p.
