I liked Batman Arkham Asylum a lot, and thought it'd be a good idea to create another of the rogues and aspire to that standard of quality. This is my version of Black Mask, loosely based on the concept by Carlos D'Anda. The final game model will hopefully be something like what Arkham Asylum 2 contains. It's still in the sculpting stages. I intend to document the whole process here, and critiques are most welcome.

I may be wrong but the head looks a little small to me.

this is looking wonderful! fantastic detail work, i cannot wait to see this rendered!

the only thing that seems off to me is his feet. they do not look like they are firmly placed on the ground. The bottom of the sole looks almost rounded. the figure looks off balance due to the angle and one leg looks longer than the other.

The head size seems correct to me, average human is 7.5 head tall and that model seems to follow this rule.

One thing that seems strange to me is that the upper lip is going up a lot (and when I watch your concept there seems to be no upper lip) and because of that it kinda seems like the nose is smaller. Maybe reduce what we see of the gum to make the nose longer.

That<s the only thing I see right now, the rest seems pretty solid to me.

Looking great man. A couple things seem off to me though. The ear placement feels a little weird to me, but that could be because you have it completely attached to the head. The tie seems a bit to blocky. It has some very thin cloth going into a very thick triangle at the neck, and it doesn't feel like the part of the tie that goes around the neck fits with the part hanging down.

Well, the modeling is quite good. However it doesn't look like the same character due to the way you have interpreted the skin on the face. In the concept work it looks like a head without flesh, with blackish facial muscles...and I like that look a lot. Yours is different, it looks like his head is still covered in flesh, and the main focus is on the peeled back lips. I like the concept look a lot more and I think you should go back to that, getting rid of this forced looking grin that is created by the lips.

Thank you for all the critiques and comments, they're very helpful.

Auria, kanooshka: I've modified the head size and worked on the shoe sole.

chewsti: Yeah, I started with a super basic head, so the ears were stuck on to the head. It should look better now.

MightyReg, stuh505: I have changed the concept, I've attempted a slightly different take on him. His story is that he's a burn victim, who had an ebony mask burnt onto his face. My concept is that some parts of the mask were hollowed out, and exposed the face beneath (like on the sides of the face and the upper jaw) . These areas are still visible, with underlying flesh visible. The other parts of the face is the mask, essentially. His neck and arms also show evidence of fire damage. I'll post a paintover as soon as possible.

Here's a small update. I've retopologised the head, and worked on small tweaks on the whole body. Still have detailing to do, especially on the face and arms.

dude!!!

It's looking great so far. My critique would be the same as stuh505. I get that you tried to do something different with the face but IMO it's not working properly. Specially if you start picturing how it's going to be textured. If you continue on your path you are going to have a change of texture on that lip area. Where in the original concept all the head has one treatment.
I suggest you save that file and try the explore the other route. You don't have to detail them but have them side by side to see which one works best.

Either way, good luck and I love how this is turning out.

cheers,

Here's a paintover of the sculpt. Hope it illustrates where the character's headed. He's retopologised now, and unwrapped. Baking maps now.

Your sculpt is looking good so far, something that stands out to me though are that the ears seem too far forward. Check out some profile head shots, they are usually further back. Also your gun holsters are backwards. The butt of the gun should be facing away from the character, not towards as they would in a hip or gunslinger holster. Shoulder holsters that high up are drawn by moving your arm across your body and drawing from the opposite side. As you have them now they are not useful in any sort of combat situation.

Looking forward to seeing more

Tasp: Heh, thanks. Totally missed the holster. I only looked at pics of holsters that weren't attached to anything. Thanks for the crit. Will check the ear as well.

Finally got the time to work on him again. Here's a texture update. WIP diffuse and and spec maps. Crits welcome.

it might be just me but his clothes seem to crisp and sharp. i would suggest softening them up a little. not sure on the shoes either they look too pointy.

that being said like i stated I am not familiar with the character just looked at it and pointed out the things that hit me right away.

good job though overall.

Sorry I missed your reply, Emiliano. Hope you like the result so far. I've kept the burnt away lips after trying some options in Pshop.

At first, the head shape felt (VERY slightly) awkward, but I am pretty sure that is just me still getting used to seeing this kind of stuff in orthographic viewports...

So basically all I have to say is AWESOME. Good luck.

ps: I absolutely love the folds in the shirt. Keep up the good work.

Proflooney: Thanks for the crit, I'll give the folds another look.

Alexsani: Glad you liked it, I'll update again tomorrow.

It looks very good. I think I'd like to see how the shirt fits on the torso be more realistic. The part that pops out to me are the shoulders. Ideally the anatomy underneath would show up more and the wrinkles would be toned down a bit I think. Your guys shirt is more baggy than this photo but still...

Curtj5: Thanks for the crit, I'll take another look at the shirt.

Here's another update. Changed the colour of the shirt to something a bit more interesting. Also worked on adding details to the accessories. Crits welcome.

don't know if it's just me but the head looks kinda big. did this gif to show what i'm talking about...could be personal preference in the end

btw: could you tell us some facts...like texture size and polycount.

MrFunk: Thanks for the crit, I've reduced the head size. As it stands, he's a little under 17000 tris with 2K diffuse, spec and normal maps. I used a separate 1K map for the gun.

Here are some new Marmoset screengrabs under different lighting conditions, and viewport grabs and wireframes. Critiques are welcome.
