Hi Guys, im not into rigging and this is the part of getting my hands dirty :)
i tried binding a character with seperate meshes
and painting weight in one side thinking to mirror it when done
but mirroring doesnt work with seperate mesh or i miss some settings?
tried exporting weighta on the left leg and importing it to the right leg but doesnt work as well :(
Is it possible in maya to mirror skin weights with separate mesh?

I just checked with my model and seems you're right you can't mirror weights when they are separate meshes as they are not in the same skin cluster. Simplest solution is to just combine the geometry for the sake of skinning so that you can mirror it over, ie pair of shoes-combine, then just have to do one skin.

its also good to check your settings, I also have problems then realise wrong settings.
before mirroring, usually helps to turn off skin cluster (take from 1 to 0).
Are you mirroring across correct axis? so if X-axis is from left to right then should mirror across YZ, and check the right direction...

any help?
