I was wondering what is the easiest way to use few machines for rendering. I've tried in the past at my old job but never got it to work.

Now its 2010, is there any simple easy to setup solution that I should be aware of?

screamernet it's easy way, if you work with standard content dir with lightwave.
if you want an advanced manager of net rendering i can suggest butterfly net render, i tried all softwares during years, and it's the best for net rendering.
it support many render engine, many kind of project from 3d to after effects, it's simple to use, to setup and very strong on hard work.

if you want to test screamernet matt gorner put a PDF on newtek website about setup of screamernet with standard tool of Lightwave.

screamernet setup is the same from 4.0 version...
remember that if you follow the KIS (Keep IT Simple) rules all work fine ...
if you have problem, ask and i try to help you.

As I understand you need to save your scenes always in the same directory. Thats already a bad start because I make new folders for each new projects. It would be impossible for me to manage one big scenes folder for all my scenes.

going to bed now, I'll check tomorow back morning!!

thanks again.

if you use a structure like this, is simple, you keep consistency and is not so difficult to manage.
Every end of year you archive and delete from content the project of past year, and you have few and easy structure to manage.
an help to rename and manage lots of folder is "bulk rename utility" a freeware to rename file and folder.

mmm... I dont know... I guess I should try it just for network rendering anyway. I like to be able to back-up a full project just by dragging the project window.

The standard plugin called "content manager" allow you to do this in a simple click, it allow you to consolidate a content structure that load something from outside of content, or allow you to export a full content for a backup, with a single click.
Anyway my backup system is software, i have 3 backup unite and manage it with an eccellente shareware called allway synch.

It is quite sad that it is 2010 and LW is still without a "user friendly" network rendering system out of the box.

Anyway, here is what I use.

Certainly CORE will ultimately have this implemented out-of-the-box. As well as a good render-passes system!

for a few period lw had a different standard way to manage net render called stealth net, but later disappear, i use it for few times, and it was quite good. but butterfly is the best bucks that i every spent.
think to buy it like a plugin, the time that you can save is more important that few bucks that you spent.
have a nice day.

i use last version of butterfly standard.
mule is unsupported and horrid software, i bought, i never be able to use well, they never answer to email of question and on forum they answer later (after weeks) and without solution...
Avoid MULE, is bad money
