I'm putting together a modeling reel in Maya 2008 and I would like to be able to show
my wireframe outlines ( shading>wire frame on shaded ). I have wire -frame -on- shaded
selected in the viewing port but the lines aren't there when I render it out.

I don't remember if this works in 8 because it has been a while since I used 8, but If you are rendering with Mental Ray, a good way to do it is:
Open your attribute editor for your material. go to the outputs.

Open the Mental Ray dropdown menu in your outputs.

Under contours check enable contour rendering. The color there will adjust the color of your wireframes. Also you will want to play with the width in this section to adjust the width of your wires.

Then open your render settings and in the Mental Ray settings under the features tab there is a drop down menu called contours, check enable contour rendering.
put over sample at 3
choose gaussian filter for filter support.
Then click the dropdown menu underneath (draw by property difference), check "around all poly faces".

That should do it.
Good Luck!
