Right, extrude can form the cubes, then how about the texture? how to select the cubes to form a letter, one by one? is there any way to group-select the range wanted just like the mask tool in a graphic software?

you can select each invidual face on the object if you want. You can then make a selection out of it and apply a different material to it if you want. The only problem would be that your mesh will be very dense and slow your machine down.
The color could also possibly be put in,in Photoshop after using a color blend layer etc and using the polygon lasoo :)
Actually with a square brush you could do it in no time.

that was done with a plugin ... namely Jenna by BhodiNut (http://www.bhodinut.com). One of Jenna's functions is the ability to control
a 'density' of iterated object instances via texture channels. Go ahead and check it out -- there is a demo!

this image is quite old. older than bhodinuts recent releases. it was made with c4d-xl6. i have mailed the artist - maybe he will give some advice.
When I look again there seems to be 3 levels of extrusion only,I dont see and cubes which are not at one of those three levels.
Good idea sad

I think the pic was made with many planes. some for the letters and one for out. The one for out used boolean operation to cut the letter planes. Then in poly form, extrude them to get the result.
This is my try.

Hello, this is Oliver Pietern alias Hoschie. I am the creator of that picture. There exist a complete animation of that picture on my homepage:
http://www.hoschie.de/video/piXel.html.
I created the picture to symbolisize pixel. Every pixel of the texture should colourized an own cube. The texture (animation) has a size of 77*58 pixel and 100 frames (PAL european video standart 768*576 pixel and 25 frames/s). Every side of the cube is 0.9x and a filet for a better outward appearance. I copied the cubes that there arise a area of 77*58 qubes (77*78x).
Then I assigned the material (flat projection). That looks very smooth. To give every cube the colour of the own pixel I changed the sampling from mip to none mapping in the material manager.
Further steps can be seen on the puzzle tutorial (an example):
http://mvpny.com/PuzzleTutorial.html
I work on a tutorial about my "pixel animation".
There exists a lot of other helpful tutorials about different problems on my site:
http://www.hoschie.de/3d/anl/anl.html
(Sorry for my English, I hope you can rebuild the steps. If there are any questions send me an e-mail)
I was very surprised that there was a discussion about my picture, but I can only promise, that I have not extrude or used bhodinut :-)
Thanks for coming by and clearing that up for us Hoschie
I have book marked your site for devouring information from later on tonight
