View Full Version : Space Station
Trolloc003 05-13-2010, 12:08 AM Hi, I'm trying to create the inside of a space station. So I need to make a little bit of a bumpy sort of geometry. I found this tutorial for 3ds max, http://forcg.com/tutorials/modeling/create-an-awesome-3d-future-city-day-1/ which is amazing. I use maya though, and was wondering if anyone could offer tips on how to reproduce something similar? (the random extrusion part specifically)

That random block-ness has an actual name believe it or not, It's called greeble. It's has quite an interesting look to it. If you look at the spaceships in Alien/Star Wars, that's the method they used. (for their miniatures, not 3d)
So, in maya, to achieve the look your going for:
Simply select the faces you want extruded
Extrude the faces (dont move them around yet)
Now, while the faces are still selected, go to Edit Mesh > Transform Component (option Box)
Turn the Random to 1
Now after that, go to the right of the maya interface to the INPUTS, and select Local Translate Z, and have fun. :)
my result:
