View Full Version : 3dsmax modeling-Extrude\Move verts\Edges inwards
FabioMSilva 05-11-2010, 09:27 AM hey guys, ive been wondering what are the best way to do this since sometimes i can do it, but sometimes max doesn't allow me. basically i have a cilinder\sphere, select it's edge loops, and i want to extrude or sometimes move the edgeloops inward(or outward). sometimes its easy(like extruding inwards, but sometimes its not so easy. i tried setting coordinates to local and sometimes put the pivot in the center of the mesh but it sometimes doent do the trick. basically what i really need is a sure way to make all the verts in the loop move towards the center of the mass. if i move them manually its a bit complicated.
just wondering if u guys have solution for this.
thanks!

Select the loop and use scale. I think that's what you mean? It has nothing to do with extrude though.
Update: I just loooked at your folio :). I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Can you explain more clearly?

If you are actually talking about extrude:
In face mode, extrude behavior is controlled by selecting extrude type. Instead of clicking the extrude button, click the settings button next to it. You probably want to select local normal as the extrude type.
Let's say you have a cylinder and you have a ring of faces selected. If you have multiple faces selected, it takes the average normal of all selected faces. If group type is selected, the faces are considered as one face and moved without changing size or shape in the direction of the average normal. In the case of a ring of faces, the normals cancel each other out. Max seems to make an arbitrary decision to move in one direction, because it is mathematically impossible to move in the average normal direction without changing the size and shape of the face group.
I think this is a flaw in the interface. You should be presented with an error message saying that averaging the normals results in a nul vector or something.

it only happens in some cases...it's really frustrating...
when i encounter a specific case i'll post it here so u guys can check it out
