View Full Version : attaching Subdivs

Hi, I'm trying to attach two subdivs together, and I get odd results. It happens only when I duplicate the first surface using scale X=(-1). Example:

Make half a face, duplicate it using Scale X(or Y or Z - doesn't matter) = (-1), and do Subdivs->Attach. You will see that, if the threshold is big enough, the FARTHEST vertices are trying to connect to each other - not the closest ones...

You can easily reproduce this problem by creating a poly cube (converted to subdivs), removing its left half, duplicating it as above, and trying to attach both parts back together. If, instead of scaling to -1, you rotate it 180 degs, there is no problem. But I can't do this with a non-symmetric surface (like a face).

I've read some of the ways to attach subdivs in Maya (manual/subdiv->attach), that appeared here in the forum, but I couldn't imlement them with my half-face...

Any ideas how to make the attachment work after scaling to -1?

try converting your subd mesh into a poly mesh by going into modify>convert>subd to poly>vertice lvl 0. this will make a low poly mesh that you can easily convery back into a subd mesh. After you have your poly mesh duplicate it and attach the polys as normal then convert back to subd. Thats the way I ALWAYS attach subds. I hope it helps.

Have you tried deleting the history of the duplicated half? I don't ever recall having any problems connecting sub-d surfaces since they're a derivative of polys in Maya. Just take your poly face cage, then duplicate that and scale negative. Combine the the two faces Polygons -> Combine. Merge the verts down the center of the head. And then Modify -> Convert -> Poly to Sub-d.

I'm still trying to create the bug that you're getting, and I'm not getting it.

We'll, see if we can't figure this out.

peace,

Lu

What you're saying is that you never used subdiv->attach.... why is that? Why are you using the merge-vtx method instead of subdiv->attach?

Anyway, I've tried deleting the history, and it didn't help. I'm using Maya 5.0 btw.

I have a question about what you said - converting the subdiv back to polies: I've done the test with the box, but before I converted to poly, I added some detail (refined some areas, streched a few vertices, etc). After I converted to poly, I got the corresponding mesh, but then, after I converted BACK to subdivs, I got a whole lot more faces than I originally had... Is this regular behavior?
