Now that Max5 is around the corner, I reckon A|W needs to wrap up Maya5 pretty soon as well. But when? Has anybody heard any target month? Besides, from what I've heard they've put most development muscle behind improving the renderer. Can anybody confirm this? What are the other main expected new features/updates?

first we should wait for maya4.5. i don't think that wavefront has to jump to reach the version 5 of max. version numbers don't tell anything.

Is 4.5 coming out at Siggraph this summer?

I heard June or July. One of the summer "J" months.

This from a reseller employee who shall remain nameless.

So what new features/improvements will 4.5 have in store? Have A|W said anything about this or are there any obvious, specially urgent issues to fix?

Personally my biggest benefit is the across-the-board platform upgrade for 4.5. I've got a screaming G4 with 3.5 sitting next to an archaic SGI with 4.0. Can't wait to make the migration to a fast computer.

All i know confirmed on 4.5 are liquid dynamics and sub-d improvments...i think a sub-d to nurbs conversion option too..
