View Full Version : 3ds max edge loops
Eliadan 05-05-2010, 06:49 PM hello, I'm trying to achieve this nice edged box on a curved surface, but after like two days of trying how to position edges I decided to post here.
the thing is, no matter what solution I try, I always get those nasty ugly corners or pinches in the topography of the curved surface after I apply smooth.
so, how would you add edges to the object to have nice corners of the box and still maintain the curved surface. thanks

Adding edges on the inside is the first step. Also adding edges in the actual corners helps keeping things under control.

if you would just make illustration where to draw the lines (of course the lines are inside too), because I feel like I have tried every possibility to put them there somehow

There you go, three choices :)

tried all those before, with the 2nd and 3rd I get those nasty pinches at the corners. it looks terrible that way.
the first one is not very convenient, as it would deform the curved surface

It needs edges on the inside, no matter how you solve it. The point is you are trying to make a square shape in a rounded object, that is one of the hard things to get done properly, and to get it to look right. You probably have to add more edge-loops to get it to stay in place and still look nice.
As for the first one: The simple solution to getting rid of the deformation is to go into the smoothing and play around with the vertices there, for the quick and dirty solution.

I have added lines on the inside. it still looks the same and has the ugly black pinches.
the first solution, well, I have tried that and when I adjusted the vertices, I noticed it again created those black pinches (plus the surface is not perfectly curved). sigh, I have watched some tutorials on hard surface modelling but without a clue.

Well the absolute most dirty way to solve this, which normally stays hidden far beyond the reaches of the black legion on the edge of death it to collapse the high poly mesh, and, god forgive me, use boolean.

boolean, the abomination feature of all CG area? NEVERRR

Like with most SubD problems the answer is more geo...add more segments to the rounded part, so you don't need additional support edges to hold the corners of the extruded box.

I already figured it out somehow, the surface is not perfectly curved now, but shrug. its a small detail anyway. thanks
