Hey that looks great  I'm surprised that no-one else has done mushroom houses (well, I haven't seen any other ones yet).
That looks very promising, I'm looking forward to seeing more!
I am still working on the model here.and I am thinking about that I should texture first or model?
my tree!I hope you guys will like it!
Can I post 2 pictures in one reply message?I don't know how.So I post separate.

I really like it...nice start. It's very playfull and whimsical(sp).
RE: your questions: Definetly model first then texture. Your tree is really nice. And in order to post multiple images in one reply you need to get your pictures up onto a server or website and then type in the hyperlink to the pics. Here's an example of how you'd write the hyperlink: "<img src="http://www.mysite.net/mypage/mypicture.jpg">" Then you just do that for each of the pics you want to post.
Hope that helps.
It's Sunday now.and I finially have time to model my scene .This is a scene with a little comic style I think. Please tell me what you guys think about it! thanks.

hehee, i really like this one...it reminds me of super mario (8 bit games) keep it up :)
Oh~I finish two trees and a little small thing into the scene.and I think I should start to texture it now!

Starting to look very impressive, I hope the background will have trees off into the distance.

Hey Rex, that looks great  It would be cool if you could post a larger render though....
Please be sure that when you texture this, make each mushroom house different - it really ruins a scene when people are too lazy to texture each thing differently.
Looking forward to seeing more!!
thanks guys!Beacuse I don't have much time ,so I 'll do the best I can.
Here is my plan.I am thinking about use fog into the background,so don't worry about the background. It's the texture that I am worry about. It will take time to map the texture at the trees. The UV is a little complex. And I think I will use the light to make the shadow of the forest. But first thing to do is to complete the texture!
By the way what size you guys think is the best resolution to post on here?
leigh
05-28-2002, 10:31 AM
For resolution, I normally render at 720 x 576, and keep it that size when I post :)

Eek, missed this one too..neat stuff! I dig the little mushroom houses and everything. The trees are coming along cool too..gonna do the traditional red caps, or something completely else?
Definitely would like to see a little bigger, esp. for those of us running higher res. Look forward to more :)
P.S. Leigh - D1 pal? Non-square pixels? I usually scale back to 640x to post if it's from video size, otherwise it looks stretched out..though that's with crappy NTSC 720x486..don't have that prob? Maybe pal helps being closer to square.
okay this is 640X480.I work on the marshroom's texture, and make it look covering the moss. But it is not the finial pic ,I will fix a little dital about it .and I will make all the mushrooms with different texture. So I will work on others firt and when I finish all I will go back to fix them all.
tell me what you guys thinking abut this one and give me some advise. Thanks
:)
P.S I feel the displacement is to over,so I fix it a little bit and the coor too.this is the upload pic.
Here is the little thing that I put into my scene.

cool
I like this (littel thing) but what is it:shrug: ?
about the first image The mashroom I thing the green grass is too mush try to decrise the bump map and the area of the green on the mashrom surface
keep going:thumbsup:
THANKS for your advise.~dodo3d.your are righ about the mushroom house and I'll fix it latter.
And about the little one is some kinds of plant, taller then grass.smaller then the the mushroom.you can see at the left side of my sketch.I am happy you like it!
:)
I texture the ground and others.and add some background image.Next I am working on the tree's texture.I think I need to add some detail of the road to make it look better.after that I will fix the light.add some fog,and ues the paint effect to get some rattan on the tree and grass under the ground.
I will be pretty happy if anyone could give me some advises.thanks!

The piece looks really good. I think the only thing that is bugging me right now is that glow on the little mushrooms (not the blue curly things, the red ones). I would recomend trying a version with out the glow on them. Great work so far otherwise.

Good work I don't have comments to say more than it's good keep going but I agree with ZrO-1 about the glow thing but don't remove the glow just make it less intenisty ,and add more details to ur wonderful enviorement ;)
Good luck I'll keep an eye on this
SWEET! very nice tree!and very complex environment!Good job!

Hey Rex, this is looking great
Some suggestions though:
- try bringing the grass forward in front of the trees a bit more, so that it comes down closer to the path. It just doesn't look quite right that the trees roots are going straight into sand, and there is no grass around the roots.
- as previously mentioned, yeah, remove those glows from the little mushrooms.
- it would be nice if there were little clumps of grass here and there along the path - it would look better if all that sand was broken up a bit.
- Speaking of grass, you should use a hair engine or something for long strands of grass and weeds - at the moment, it looks like the forest has a regular garden service mowing the lawn :p
- it would maybe be cool to have some footprints or wagon trails or something along the path.
- the bump/displacement of the grass on the mushrooms should be a bit stonger.
- there is something strange about the lighting in your scene - there seem to be lights coming from places where there are no apparent light sources. You should consider modelling some lanterns or something where actual lights are placed to illustrate where the light is coming from.
This is particularly apparent on and around the mushroom in the foreground on the right hand side.
But apart from all that, I think your scene is looking very cool :) I love those little magical purple blueish things.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks guys~your advises are very helpful!and I will fix it and work on the detail. And about the glow mushroom ,I have two visions.one is regular other is glow.I post those two ,and tell me what you guys think about that.I don't know which one is better.
and because I didn't start to work on the light ,so the glow and the transparent effect are not acceptable for me now.I will fix it latter!
p.s this is the regular

Weeeee!!!
I like it!!!
It has that smurf-ish feeling to it.... no wait it is much better than that!!! I like those glow thingy's very much!!! keep up the good work!
This one I took a little longer to update.I fix the light's fog and shadow, the old textures.the glow effect, camera's depth of field and the trees's texture(the tree's UV is killing me)!
Next time I will work on the paint effect to add some grass and leaves, beacuse the upper of the tree looks a little strange now.
and I welcome all kind of comments, thanks.

OK, here's my 2 cents:
I think the glowing mushrooms look so cool on their own, but I don't think they really work in this compasition. They compete too much with and detract from the glowing curly-que things. Only other thing I'd work on is the inside of the mushroom huts. They seem to be getting too much light from the primary lighting. I would try either adding in a negative light inside the huts (which can be a pain in the arse), or I'd add in a dark blue-green light inside. That should help show some depth to the inside of the huts and make them pop a little more.

Really cool stuff. Love the designs and the look of the translucent bits. It's coming together nicely.
I think if the scene were overall a little darker/contrasty, the glowing shrooms could work fine..the huts definitely need to be darker inside, it almost seems like they don't have shadow casting on. I wouldn't make it full dark in there, but maybe if they have their own kind of lighting colour inside it'd help set them off.
The DOF looks real nice, makes everything seem small, but one thing I'd say is it makes it seem REALLY small..like, 1" tall trees. Which is a nifty idea in and of itself, but if that's not what you're going for, should tone it down a little.
And yeah, I'm almost glad I had to drop out simply not to have to deal with tree UVs. :argh:
Keep at it, wanna see this one done :)
thanks a lot !your comments are really helpful.I scale the tree's size to make the upper pic more clearly. and I change the light to become a night scene and the glowing's hue to make it look not to detract the others!
and I am lookinng forward your advice!thanks!!:p

the light looks really cool!!
2 Thumbs up for this one!!!

Nice!
The surface of the mushrooms is the only element I don't like - looks like painted plaster instead of something organic.
Rex, i love it, i love the moss, it looks perfect.... what did you use to render this, the moss is displaced, isn't it?? very nice displacement.....
Excellent Design, and the DOF works a treet in there.....

Hey Rex, this is looking great!!
I prefer the more warmly lit one, though :) The nightime one is cool, but I think your scene is better suited to daytime lighting. Just a thought.
Well done!! :applause:
don't listen to her Rex, what the hell would she know, damn, i mean, she can't even texture......... :p
keep the night time, style... it looks cool........ IMHO
thanks everyone!
to kaos-I am using the Maya default rendering system(without raytracing),and the moss is displacement and bump!
to dobermunk-I think the moss's displacement is still too strong!and I plant to decrease the value and add some paint effect such as rattan on those.thanks your advise ,I am grateful!
I make some change of the character(because the original one is too normal I think),and I did a little sketch!but I don't know what's wrong with my scaner.so I will post it later when the scaner works!
thanks all for the comment:D
Finially, the scaner works!and those are the new character!the sketch look a little simple.and the snail is to carry the furniture, and the shell can be opened!I am not sure about the character I mark that I will do or not !

I am likein' the last image the best so far...I was thinking it might look really neat to have some light eminating from behind the door in the tree!! maybe like a yellow or orange volumetric light....that seeps through the cracks...keep it up!!
The paint effect system is really slow. It's pretty hard to get what I want interactively.I have to render and render again for getting the paint effect I want. This is almos the finial image for my scene!Next time I will start to my character. Time is shortage and I am not sure I can't finish on time.I will try my best.Hope you like this and look ffor your advice! Thank!

I love it, but the character you circled on your sketch looks like vivi from Final Fantasy 9...sorry! Anyway I love the atmosphere and the lighting in the last update looks allmost perfect!!!!

I only have one complaint: Too much depth of field. You have you DOF set up so short right now it looks like you were shooting a leggo sized miniature set with a telephoto lense. :D (that was my attempt at humor)
Seriously though, I think the DOF takes away from the piece. I don't think you need it at all, but if you really want it make it very very subtle.
I like your start on the PaintFX. Isn't that tool awesome. It's like Bob Ross in a bottle. ;)
personally i like the "enchanted" scale the DOF gives the image, but, you should try it on lower settings to see how not-so-blurry piccy looks...... you never know, you might like it........
BEAUTIFUL scene!!!
oh, and a question, this paintFX that i am hearing so much about, does it actually create geometry, and is this geometry interactive in the scene, and does it cast shadows ??
just something i always wanted to know!!!!
thank everyone!
to Sangotten-thanks for reply!the character look like vivi I know!So I will not work on that one !I will do the other one!
to ZrO-1-thanks your comment,I will try to decrease the depth of field.and try to render another view!
to Kaos-thanks ,about the paint effect as I know is a sort of particle system!and it not really create a geometry!you only can see its line in your openGl view!put if you are in the paint effect veiw ,you can see its render result interactive but itrun pretty slow when you have a lot of paint effect stroke !and it have fake shadoaw and cast shadow,so you can choice you want to cast in real light or not!but it really runs pretty slow!!!I almost loss my patience!here is my wireframe scene, the paint effect just look like that in my pre view!sorry it is rough!
paint effect wireframe!and sorry for the size .I don't know why the 640x480 is too big.So I have to post this one!

Here's my limited understanding of the inner workings of Maya's PaintFX tool. You start by painting a "stroke" which is a curve in geometry either by itself in the view plane or on a NURBS surface. That curve then emits what Maya calls 'tubes' the tube works in a similar manner to a particle effect system...but it's not particle-based (there are no particles you can manipulate). The tubes are basically 3D but are used to drive the 2D brush image. In other words you can make 3D manipulations to the extensive properties of the tubes which affect the brush image...but the actual brush image is 2D. The tubes can be animated fully. You can do things like having grasses and trees sway in the wind, water fall from a drain pipe, or snow/rain fall from the sky. The PaintFX brushes can use the real lights in the scene for highlights and shadows or they can use defaults (works like compositing a pic in post). The PainFX tubes/brushes can cast real shadows if they use the real lights, or they can cast fake shadows (with or without real lights). The fake shadows can be either a 3D projection of the brushimage silhoette(sp) onto the real geometry or it can be a 2D translation (based on light direction) of an opaque black copy of the brush image. The 3D/2D PaintFX brush system is rediculously powerfull. You can use it to paint color onto NURBS and Sub-D surfaces (no texture mapping) as well as adding complicated highly detailed objects into the scene which can be represented with very little actual 3D geometry.

nice work...
I think your scene looks really good, but could use a lightmap to simulate shadows from overhead leaves...I think that would darken the whole image and help bring our eye to the centre.
how did you do the DOF in your scene? what software?
to mikey 11-thanks for your comment .I am using the Maya only.
to Zro-1-your explain is pretty detialed.thanks a lot!As I know about the paint effect there is one thing similiar to the particle system is "segment". Segment value is like how many particle in your tube. It decide the detail of your stroke scuh as curve.texture.smooth.inc.
I change a little bit view angle and without using any depth of field. this is a test with night light!and I still work on my character.I am looking forward you advice!thanks!
this is the character that I did so far and still work on .I am trying to do a little cute character!
I did a little changes about my character to make him look like a adventurer.beacuse I think I need a subject between my scene and the character.but I think it maybe a liitle to late for now to change anything beacuse the time .So I try to do qickly as possible in my limit time.I hope you will like it!
ok~next time will be the texture .I hope I can make it on time.and I am looking for all your comment no matter good or bad.and I really learn a lot form your works and comments. Thanks!

I like your scene even with out the character. The modeling is fantastic on your little bug guy and the snail. I'm not sure I'd put them into the scene though unless you can get them textured first. I think that adding them in untextured would hurt your nice scene. Of course if you can get them textured they'd make a great addition.
Time!Time!Time! It's the only thing I need!I don't have much time to work on the detail.hope you like!
I think I should try to work on createing characters more often.I am welcome for all comment!
ps~I fix the light a little bit!
