i saw a tutorial to model a tgennis ball a awhile ago in 3ds max. The deal is to start off with a box, create a chamfer at the edges and then apply the spherify modifier. Hope this helps.

If you look at the images, you can get a pretty good idea of the process (you just have to figure out what to do for your pattern tho).
