View Full Version : Best way to open .Max files in Modo
digitalworkshop 05-05-2010, 09:43 AM Hi all,
What's the best way to open a .max file in Modo? I know Modo can open .3DS files and .obj and .fbx file format. Do i need another software like Deep Exploration to convert .max file for best conversion. What about the UVs and textures? will they be fine when i re-open the file in MODO for rendering. please throw some light on the workflow of max to Modo.
best regards,
Digi

Stay away from 3ds. Very limited n a few aways - for instance you can only export 64k faces per object.
Try obj or fbx format.
For both you can read the export specs here (http://docs.autodesk.com/3DSMAX/13/ENU/Autodesk%203ds%20Max%202011%20Help/index.html).

The reason is that i want to use Evermotion's Archviz interior Arch scenes and then take them to MODO and light them there. I am a lighting/shading guy and Although i am learning MODO and really enjoying modeling too but i want stay focussed on using MODO mainly for lighting/rendering. so far what i have scene in the Gallery of MODO the results are really good and i heard from people on forums that its really really fast. So i want to switch to MODO as my preferred lighting/rendering platform.
Thanks for your answer.i will go through the link you mentioned and i stay clear of .3DS.
best,

I would try exporting one of your projects using both obj and fbx and see which works the best. You might end up using one format for exporting one type of object and the other format for other types of objects.
Just as a heads up, cameras do not transfer correctly from max to modo. After you import a camera it will have to be manually adjusted in modo. This issue has been brought up several times on the Luxology forums.
