PawnMarauder 05-04-2010, 03:35 PM The showcase of my ongoing effort to learn anatomy.
:arteest:
I've recently started a few life drawing classes, these first pictures are a select few of my first drawings in a long time. The poses were very short at first: 30s - 2m and the final pose was around 30m. I preferred the shorter drawings because you're forced to be very selective in what lines you choose to draw. That said, I think once my anatomy knowledge improves I'll appreciate the longer poses more.

These images were from another class I attend where the structure is a little different. Instead of quick 30s-2m sketches we start with 15m poses and I'm not sure how to exactly make the most of the time. The class mainly consists of pensioners, so I guess things have to go slower .

I'm fairly pleased with the back study on the right and the profile shot but unfortunately, I ran out of time to finalise them.

A continuation of my back-log from the last couple of weeks. My proportions are terrible but it's something which my latest drawings - which I'll post soon - have improved on.

Thursday morning class. The tutor pointed out that I tend to draw the outline first and then shade so I'm trying to balance it out a little more with initial sketch, then shade, and then finalise a little more. The drawing in the top-right of the first image is my first attempt at the new approach and it's good enough. Apart from that the obvious problem I'm having is proportion.

Thursday evening class. After getting a few tips on how to draw and measure I think my proportional work has improved. There is obviously barely any difference between these two images but I'm pleased about the consistency. I think for the time being I'm going to focus on simply making accurate drawings as opposed to drawing free-hand.

These are master copies of Rubens. I'm pleased about the first images but I'm not sure about the ones on the right. With the male figures the muscles are very exagerated - I'm not sure whether that helps...

Hey PawnMarauder, welcome to forums. since you have started life drawing i would say thats a great direction to start with. Just keep at it now and i would suggest you study some other teachers like bridgeman, vilppu and more as well to see how they tackle initial phases of their sketches. It would help you improve your line economy and confidence.
tc and keep posting the progress :)
Hi there, welcome to the forum!
How long have you been drawing for? So far, your drawings are looking good and you are showing improvement already. Your initial sketches from what I am seeing are very similar to what I did when I was first going to life drawing. I would outline my forms and it lead to some proportion issues. I would echo the recommendation of Killermachine and suggest you check out how others artists (like Vilppu and Loomis) do their quick gestures. I personally changed my style to doing a sort of mannikin in the intial gesture and it really helped my final works.
Also about the master copies: I believe the musculature is often very distinct because it is a way for you to get used to seeing the muscles and recognizing them. This is so that you can know what you are looking at and when you see a bulge somewhere you can know why it's there and what the underlying anatomy is. I'm in the process of learning anatomy and I have found master copies to be extremely helpful in my learning process.
I especially like the arm and torso study of the top male in your most recent post.
Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks for the responses. Bridgeman, Vilppu, Loomis - are these drawing books? If so, could one of you point me in the direction of the specific books you're talking about?
@Tasp: I've drawn on and off for awhile but never anything 'serious' like life drawing. In all my early drawings I just drew from eye and never measured the model i.e. sticking my pencil in the air and squinting, I just need to get into the habit of doing that. I'm also trying to focus on the shoulder-pelvis relationship which helps with that "mannequin" method. Next class on Tuesday so, more then.

Another Rubens copy. The twisted poses of the 2 figures on the right were quite difficult, but they've come ot reasonably well. Although, I do think I spent an unnecessary amount of time doing this. I could probably do with being a bit less respectful in my next study.
All those people who are mentioned above are artists who also have authored drawing books. You can do a search for them on Amazon or google and you will get some results. If I remember correctly Vilppu's books can only be purchased directly from his website.
