Okay, I have very limited knowledge about video work but I just got a bundle of Lightwave and DFX+. Is DFX+ just a compositing tool and I will need something else to edit clips? If so, is there an editor that works well with it like the After Effects/Premiere relationship?

Yes, there is. Namely, Velocity from Leitch (ex-DPS) or VelocityQ (same company).

Unfortunately, both are hardware/software solutions, so they will be a rather big investment. The second downside is that they already include DFX+ in the package, so you would be buying it twice (maybe you could get a discount if you own it already, but...). But the integration is really good, you can apply effects from the NLE interface and it pops up DFX+ already presetted with the relevant flow. You can also choose to apply the effects to individual clips or to edit ranges and the flows get saved automatically together with the project, so you don't need to worry too much about file management. And since eyeon is partly owned by Leitch, the integration is bound to get only better.

But as I said, they will be expensive, and they include hardware. DFX+ doesn't integrate as well with any other software only editors. As a Lightwave user, you could probably get a good discount towards the purchase of a VideoToaster 2, which is another hardware solution, but it is also decently well integrated, at least as file support and video preview go. ToasterEdit isn't linked to DFX+ like Velocity is, but it wouldn't be impossible that such a feature becomes available in the future.

In either case, you're looking to a $2k investment at least in hardware/software for editing, so that may not be what you are looking for.

Cheers,
Andrei

Thanks for the detailed reply.

That is more than I'm willing to jump into right now. Would I be able to get by with Premiere or other low-end options?

Yeah, sure, you should be able to get by with Premiere or Vegas or similar. Just that it will be more work when you have to prepare your clips for effects and then reimport them in the projects. But nothing extremely difficult.

You could also use EDLs to alleviate some of those problems, if you are dealing with very long edits.

Cheers,
Andrei

Not sure if it's within your budget but...

BlueFish444's Iridium SD supports Premiere and DF:
http://www.bluefish444.com/support/compatibility/software/

"Bluefish444’s range of SD and HD SDI video output cards allow Digital Fusion 4 users to work in 8 bit and 10 bit uncompressed color depths. Bluefish444 and eyeon have co-developed real-time preview and frame buffer support for Digital Fusion 4."

Iridium SD is 1695$

Cheers!
