View Full Version : HCR #25: THE OCEANS - Blue Whale and Cub
Rafa-el 05-03-2010, 11:24 PM Im not much of a organic modeler, hell im not much of a modeler at all but i guess this is why they call this a challenge huh? im taking advantage that im on a free month and im giving my best at this, i will be doing a scene with a blue whale and its cub, something along the lines of this
http://www.dale-hanson-studio.com/img/Coldcast-bronze/Large/27-coldcast-brz-blue-whales.jpg
i still need to double check the general look of a blue whale since google images is showing me lots of slightly different versions of this animal, speacily in the head part.

but i did a basemesh anyway on what for now i think is the right look and what i got most from my reference research.

i think i will pause the modeling process and dive right into more and more reference i might even rent some blurays :D i dont want to kid myself and think this will be a perfect match but i try.
good luck to us all

Great choice of creature!
Your base looks like a good start so far. Only things that really stand out as off is the shape of the fluke and that of the flippers. The fluke should be more straight across and angular, the flippers longer, slimmer and more separated from the body. Think of the flippers as hands in a glove stuck to a sweater at the shoulder. Their placement should be slightly lower, as in more "chesty" and more towards the front as well. Your front ref (3rd posted image) could be misleading you in this aspect, since the mouth appears to be bloated with water taken in while foraging in that image.
Cheers!

Really nice concept, the model is beautiful, are you going to sculpt it?

Very nice choice. Not sure if you have seen this but it's a pretty awesome blue whale side reference. A friend of mine just reminded me about it.

@chichiri yeah im going to do a little sculpting to get those fine details like the wrinkles on the eye and some small imperfections on the body but only when im happy with the base model, i still need to model the inside of the mouth.
@tim yeah man i used that small drawing on the corner to get my proportions right when i was building my basemesh, but i got it from google images and i didnt know that there was a site where you could zoom in so much on it! thanks a lot it will help me a bunch when i start to sculpt!
no updates from me today because im finishing a freelance job but i hope to get back to my whale tomorrow, see you later guys.
