View Full Version : File Management in Cinma 4D
Pseudonym 09-12-2003, 12:14 PM I would like to organise my files in separate folders for projects, materials, browser catalogues etc.
For some reason, Cinema 4D will go to the last folder opened, regardless of the menu being used. For example, if I load a project and then go to load a material, I will be taken to the folder from which the project was loaded.
This is not how I’m used to working and doesn’t seem logical to me. Why doesn’t Cinema 4D independently remember which folder was last accessed from each different menu? Should I be managing my files differently?

Yep, this annoys the hell out of me too. I've made this suggestion to Maxon several times--please do the same so we can hopefully get this behavior in the future.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll definitely be giving Maxon a prod over this.
Cinema 4D's optimised workflow is promoted as one of the main features of the program. Its brain-dead file navigation behaviour must cause millions of extra mouse clicks around the world every day.
Presumably, a more intelligent approach would be easy to implement, so it's difficult to understand why this hasn't been done yet.

Jus a guess, but how about "because no-one ever bothered to complain"? ;)
I thought that maybe it was an OS issue, beyond the control of the programmers, but if not, then it certainly is lame.
hmm....
do we need a file managment petition as well?

I think something like Maya's projects would be pretty cool.
Makes it much easier having control over everything in a scene,
that's for sure.

Cinema saves everything in one file so its easier than say XSI or LW which saves everything else sepeartely and really necessitates a file management system. However, I do agree that the the last accessed file should not be the default location of your next file access, especially since you might be searching for something of an entirely different kind of file. Locking the open file diaolog to a certain directory (open always at the file root or at a place you specify in the prefs) or making it context sensitive (open material requests at the material folder, etc.), would really improve workflow... Just my 2 cents...:)
