Hi Everyone. This is my first HMC, so I'm glad to have some free time to do it. I'm doing the Scalloped Hammerhead Shark. I got started a little late, so here's 2 days worth of work. I'm modelling in Maya and will go to zbrush for the fine details and maybe some battle damage. I'm going for high accuracy and have modeled the inner mouth with the connection to the gills. Please let me know what you think!

Looks like a great start to me! :)
Looking forward to your ZB progress.

Cheers!

Wow that's an awesome base, you must have been really motivated to connect the mouth to the gills. Looking forward to your progress as well!

Your base mesh looks really great so far... Definitely impressive the way you connected the gills to the mouth. Also, took a look at your portfolio... those surrealist pieces have definitely got style!

I'll post new stuff soon. Actually, connecting up the gills with the inner mouth was the easiest part so far. I guess because that part isn't very visible, so I wasn't obsessed about tweaking it till it looked perfect :)

Very good poly modelling, we see less and less of that technique nowadays, i like it.

That's what I call a base mesh. I can't wait to see what you're going to sculpt with such a base.

I hope this is ok, but I'm adding an eel to the scene with the shark. With the challenge, is it ok to submit each animal individually for the single animal portion and then a combined scene for the diorama portion? Anyway, here's shots of the moray eel that I'm working on. He's got no teeth or eyes at the moment. I think I'll have two morays fighting the shark in a coral reef.

I like traditional poly modeling a lot! here's some quick pose tests. I just threw on physical sun and sky for a quick test. I've got normal maps on the base eel geometry. the shark is just the base. a simple environment, too.

Nice start! Glad to see someone from Full Sail hoping on this project, im a FS grad myself. I like the scene setup you have going. Their poses are very dynamic, the hammerheads curving around the coral reif is very nice.

Cant wait to see updates.

Got a lot done lately. Here's some new pics and a youtube vid here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq6tpv5RDBk

The hammerhead is also rigged with dynamics. I got a little carried away

any crits are welcome!

Man, that is one angry looking eel. I love the rig and animation that you did. Those fins look fantastic! I can't wait to see this thing rendered, though. This demands animation.

Hi everyone, thanks to everyone who commented on my wips. My first HMC went pretty well. The piece is a confrontation between a young hammerhead shark and a green moray eel. The shark's companions spiral above, near the water surface while the main shark dives to investigate the eel's rocky home. I modeled everything with maya and zbrush, textured with zbrush and photoshop, rigged in maya, rendered with mental ray. The modeling took about 3 days for the shark and 3 days for the eel. Rigging took most of my time, about 2 weeks for the eel and 4 days for the shark. texturing, lighting, posing, rendering and photoshop touchups to the beauty render took another week roughly. Here's my beauty and orthos:
