View Full Version : Gnomon: Maya Fluid effects
Nightkrawler xo 04-29-2010, 11:06 PM I not trying to start trouble, but Gnomon has really disappointed me over the years with their training. I just bought some dvd's off ebay, the fluid effects one hoping to get a grasp on the subject, these tutorials are unwatchable to me. The screen quality isn't bad,but the the sound is horrible, well it sounds like the guy is smacking in my ear and it just seems unplanned. I know the teacher may be a good artist, but the Gnomon dvd's are like Unisom and with this guy smacking and swallowing in my ear,I damn near punched the computer screen. I might also add that all the Gnomon animation dvd's are horrible with the exception of the one Cameron Hood did years ago,i feel like when I buy Gnomon i get ripped off. I think I finally learned my lesson(abot buying Gnomon). Sorry I had to get it off my chest.

I'm not even sure if I should reply to this, but when I first started out I watched all the Gnomon Fluids dvd's. They seemed quite fine quality wise to me, and was able to win a little fluids "bake off" at the studio I was working at. Everyone tried doing some fire FX and various fluid type of FX, and having no prior knowledge of fluids did quite well. I thought Dave did a great job and have recommended them to others.
If they were some other fluid dvd's released by Gnomon since then, I don't know..but definitely a great starting point for me.

Sorry to hear you've been disappointed with your Gnomon purchases. I have bought many instructional DVDs from several vendors over the years, and I can relate to how frustrating it can be when you pay good money for what turns out to be something of lesser quality/value than you expected.
I've bought about 5 or 6 Gnomon DVDs, and were satisfied with every one of them, and found them to be of very good quality. Good thing too, because they are not on the cheap side comparatively.
I bought two DVD's from Eat 3D and thought they were great, as well.
I have bought instructional DVD's from other vendors with mixed results. Some were great, and some were really disappointing, or even useless. I always prefer to see a small video sample of what to expect from the DVD before purchasing. But, even that can be misleading. It is a crap shoot.

All training dvd's are pretty hit or miss, because they are all individualistically taught. Frankly, I find the Gnomon ones much more hit than most providing training. The gnomonology series was fantastic, and I hope they continue to sell cheaper and shorter to the point videos. I am not a fan at all of the overview dvd series however, as they just skim through the subject mostly.....but that's just me of course. I pushed for something years ago where the dvd's could be rated by users, but that never flew hahaha Considering our school has purchased over 200 training videos for our library and students, I'd say Gnomon is still the best by far....and we've bought from everyone. :)

My problem was i can hear his throat juices, lol. I can also hear him weezing and making other irritating noises in my ear.,when you have headphones on it's like someone is right in your ear smacking. I tried watching again tonight and i again felt like beating something.
