hi,

if i make a sort of chain and i want to test it with a normal green lambert shader i get this result :

i dont know why maya is rendering so ugly or is it a modeling problem.

tnx

Jesus is the Light
i think that you have to adjust your Jesus.

but seriously... by the looks of it you're using Maya's default light and you don't have any AA turned on. and depending on if you're using a NURBS or poly surface you'll need to adjust the render tesselation or bump up the subdivisions. review the help files on setting up Maya's renderer and go over basics of lighting.

that's all i can suggest.

Hi kaas, for a chain, you should use nurbs torus > adjust control vertex scale then apply phong material (as basic steel) :)
Then you can convert it to polygon (if you want to) :)

ok , i shall try nurbs torus, i have just fixed the problem (with some help of you guys).

it was just a lightning problem.

RLMFAO

Maya is much more sensetive to to extra gemoetry than other programs. My guess is that you attached these chains together, but then haven't done anything to smooth out the areas where they are attached. Maybe I should ask, "How did you make the chain? Did you you just stretch part of a Torus? Or did you build the pieces and not attach them?"

You can use a Poly Torus, just adjust it to 22 divisions, and stretch it.

i have made a torus , then delete the half of the faces so i have a "180 degrees" torus , then i created 2 cylinders and another "180 degrees" torus.

Try this,
Create a Torus, set the divisions at 22
In the top view, stretch one side away from the other.
You don't have to delete anything, or sew anything back together.

Here is my link...
A nurbs torus stretched to taste....mmmm yummy nurbs link.
I did convert it to polys also and at the default it could have fewer polys with the normals smoothed a little...

imo I think kaas made the better link
it looks more realistic, since chain links aren't smooth most of the time and they sometimes have weld scars

I suppose it could go either way...
It would probrably depend on the application....

Oooh, this is fun,

1) picture
2) CG
3) CG
4) picture

Did I win? I did, didn't I? Pent is right, so is wgreenlee1. Chain links will look a little different from just a modified torus, but it does depend on what you are trying to do.
