View Full Version : Software: how to make max crash in 4 simple steps. Works everytimes.

Have you ever try to use level of detail utility in max 4 or 5?

Just try this:

1- create two boxes.

2- group the 2 boxes.

3- Go in the level of detail utility (in the utilities tab) select the 2 boxes group and click on : "create new set". and then desactivate you level of detail window by clicking again on you "level of detail" button or by just going in another tab than the utilities tab.

4-Here we go: select the group and by pressing the shift key move it to try to clone your level of detail group.

Max will crash everytime you do this! It works in max 4.2 and max 5.1.

The work around is to not leave your level of detail window while you clone your group. I have lost several hours trying to understand that. I hope this thread will save precious hours to someone else.

If it'S still in Max 5 you should definitely fill out a bug report

One year ago I posted it on the discreet support forum and I never got any feedback about it (during the time I followed the forum). And now I try to search for my thread but it seems the threads are not archived for too long on the discreet forum.

But I mostly wanted to tell the users about this problem so they will not lose many hours trying to figure out what's happening.

Excuse my blasting. I like 3ds max a lot (I'm using it since 10 years) but this week I got so many bugs and I lost so many hours trying to figure out what was the problems. I'm sure that every 3d apps has its how bunch of bugs and for we, 3d artist, this is our common fate to lose time with bugs. But it remembered me to start publishing the list of bugs just to help others.

I will try also to contact discreet when I have time (for now their website is down...). But I think the first step is to post the bugs here so everybody will know about it and stop losing time.

The software that drives the board was updated half a year ago
and all the old posts are gone. there are downloadable CHM-files
with the old posts somewhere on the board.

Second:
this is often the problem, the board itself is, as it says, strictly user to user, so if you post a bug there, it will not get
too much attention by the developers.

You have to fill a bug-report form - DO IT !!!!

P.S: just to get an overview, what new problems you did'nt know, did you have this week ?

I found a similar bug last year and can beat you with just 3 steps ;).
It works in Max4 but perhaps they didnīt change it in Max5. Ok, here is another one:

1. Create a ffd spacewarp
2. Right click the ffd and select "switch to lattice level"
3. try to move the spacewarp
BANG!

Of course the "switch to lattice level" is complete nonesense when using the spacewarp, so itīs nothing to worry about. Seems like the spacewarp is based on the code of the ffd-modifier and they forgot to disable the useless stuff when opening the quad menu.

I just reported my bug. Thank you for the constructive advice. I have never contacted discreet before (apart through the support forum) cause I was thinking that the only way to contact them was the email or phone support and this is not free.

I'm happy that we can at least report bugs, but I have many bugs to report and usually I don't have much time (for now I'm looking for a job), maybe I should get a free upgrade to max 6 for helping them finding bugs.

I also had problems with a texture not showing in the viewport. Sometimes it was showing and sometimes not and I had to restart the computer. ( I think this one is maybe due to my Fire GL2 card...)

Yes it works here too. A pretty mean one too! Have you reported it? If not maybe I could report it as I think I will take the time to report all my bugs today for the benefit of YOU max users! :buttrock:

I'm not related to Discreet in any way - but
thanks for you constructive kind of handling this.....

* FFD -Spacewarp crash confirmed - but i guess the bug hides
in the RCMenu's selectionfiltercode or somewhere there...

* Vertex Z CS wrong-displaybug confirmed (with Max 4)
only happens when object axis is not worldaligned
only happens in Editable Poly ( not Editable Mesh )
might be a CS - display issue or something -
i would fill a discreet bug report

* Quicktime Issue:
My test gave me this - quicktime is sometime 1 frame
of,depending on max's timeline framenumber

I strongly recommend AVI's (or image sequences, cause a AVI
file adopts it playbackframerate AUTOMATICALLY to Max's
configured framerate

Quicktime is a resource hog on windows
- so why would you use that migrated apple tools on windows
except for compatibility and conversion thingies ?
I thing this does not make enough for a bug report ....


anyway - now i killed too much time again for something
i did not plan for
