If you are inspired, why not try to do a matte painintg for our FXWARS mini challenge, TRON TRIBUTE.
In order for us to get inspired for future challenges I will be posting now and then videos about the work of Traditional fx Studios and our VAST and often ignored VFX Legacy.

Since we are on the subject of TRON lets talk about the work done by its VFX supervisor:
HARRISON ELLENSHAW (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Ellenshaw)
Quote:
"Harrison Ellenshaw joined Walt Disney Studios as a matte artist, moonlighted to render a number of paintings for Star Wars, and then oversaw the matte department on The Empire Strikes Back at George Lucas' premier effects facility Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). Later, upon his return to Disney in 1989 for Dick Tracy, Harrison headed Disney Studios' own highly regarded effects facility: Buena Vista Visual Effects (BVVE). He has been nominated for an Academy AwardŽ along with his father, Peter Ellenshaw, for special visual effects work on The Black Hole. "

Interesting interview - at the time of the interview which I assume is before the first TRON (1982) was released he mentions he doesn't think CG will ever replace actors at least not for a long time if ever. His prediction is just now being proven wrong 28 years later..
But if we take into account that CG may never get away from using actor controlled performance he may still be correct.
