Hello !

I'm a french CG animator and I just made with 3dsmax a 9 minutes long animated movie about the Character of Gavroche (based on Victor Hugo's Les Miserables) and the barricade's event during the french civil war of 1832.

A first version (not good, I know) is over, but I did improve my lights last mounth and want now to render all the movie again.

My problem is : I can't find a good free renderer plugins for 3dsmax 4 ! Of course, I tried Brazil, but I can't afford the official version and having a big fat logo all along my video is not really interesting me !
Is there anything I can do to improve my render ? Is there a free renderer stuff dedicated to a poor artist ?

to see the first release of Gavroche, please have a look at http://www.gavroche.t2u.com
Post me your comment, questions or insult at miserables@wanadoo.fr.

Thank you

This is possibly the best you can get. Its fake but works really well, when you know what you are doing.

There also Lumiaire...

I think its a radiosity renderer(free) for max.

I recomend you look into Vray. Very fast and cheap. $200 USD I think.? which is quite reasonable.

Thank's a lot, Chico ! It really helped :-)

As a professional, could you give me some advices about my first version of Gavroche ? (of course, forget the lights and the awfull rendering). Thank's again.

I think the eyes are great:thumbsup:
ANd overall the model looks really nice too. I could maybe lend some more advice if you were to post a wireframe or/and shaded wireframe of the model.

The texture is coming along nice too, though there is something strange at the edges of the beards...Looks not unlike the crosshatch filter in Photoshop.

A few blemishes and even some wrinkles maybe...you may even want to model them in.

With the clothing you may also want to add somehightlights ...like as the light hits his back and creeps along the materials fibres. A luminosity shader will help you out here. Dont get too carried away as it will look like velvet though.

I think hes going along nice though overall:thumbsup:
Could you give me a basic background of him as my history is shocking:thumbsdow I did a basic searh on google but most stuff was in french:p

Keep it up and I look foward to progress:bounce:

Great advices !

I used Photoshop after the final render with crosshatch filter, you're right ! This was just a portrait of Victor Hugo, nothing to do with Gavroche, I was first a CG artist before believing I could become a bad 3D animator :-)

I made the ball eyes with an iris, a pupill, etc

Have a look ! I did a video making of in order to explain how I create Gavroche(Divx format) :

OR

Thank you again for all your advices ! and give me your email, I'll explain you the historical background and post you some draws and technique (I am limited to 50 ko with the forum)
