View Full Version : Newtek @ SIGGRAPH: Share your ideas
RobertoOrtiz 04-26-2010, 03:51 PM Well the time is coming where we have to start thinking about SIGGRAPH.
So tell us:
So what should Newtek present on their booth (if there is one) in your opinion?
If core is shown how should it be demoed?
How would you present the new CORE SDK?
And where does the leave classic Lightwave?
Looking forward to your comments and Ideas.

They must NOT repeat the mistakes of the past with bad presentations, simplistic examples.
Show a decent demo reel, do demonstrations of the power and flexibility of LW but steer clear of cartoony examples.
If they show anything of CORE, make sure the demo is slick and fully rehearsed, over and over until the chances of mess-ups is minimal.
Do NOT do the usual wander in, woefully underprepared and "umm, err, funny, this should work" aspects of the past.
CORE isn't going to be at full speed for a long time to come and the release of Core 1.0 is still open to fluctuation, as is it's features, so if they fail to show it in anything other than it's best light, they are going to find it hard to attract new customers.
I think it's a tough marketing place they are in, Lw9.6 development has ceased, Core is still very embryonic, how do you pull people in with your current product when it's in the process of being replaced but the replacement isn't finished baking?
At the very least though, they MUST MUST MUST prepare far better than they have in the past. Practice, practice, make sure you can run through something smoothly, get the demo down patt, so each mouse action and keystroke is 'natural' and swift.
LW's strength so far has been it's speed and ease of use, but I've never really seen any demo from the shows which get this across.
Look at the Speed Challenges over on the Newtek forums, a whole range of subjects under the gun time-wise. Now surely that would attract more attention than yet another cutesy cartoon blobby character partly built?
Simply create and play a decent reel and forgo the live dog and pony show. Folks lately seem to focus on
Newtek's lack of skilled live presentation skills and are just waiting in the weeds to bitch incessantly especially when the wait for a finished Core is so far off. No one is going to get jazzed about showing the basic gui for Core and a few modeling tools or other plain Jane features. Just create a good reel and throw some parts of Core teasers within it and leave it at that.
Or don't bother at all with Siggraph this year. Save the money for dev of Core etc. LW is the perennial underdog so what's the harm if they are a no show?
Please refrain from giving out membership cards, and throwing (sorta speak) free t-shirts at people, that is tacky and cheesey, and seems needy. This is stemming from Core package as advertised, they should take those off of whats included when you buy Core features, it seems incredibly amateurish and agian tacky... dont get me wrong, it's a nice little suprise if you threw those knick-naks in, but dont advertise about the cereal boxed prizes that you'er gonna get when you buy Core.... specially do not make this as a selling point in sig, as you are doing now.

Heh, reminds me of a trade show in the UK about 6 years ago at the business design centre in London. The exhibitors get 1 full set up day, then the next day the show starts. At the time I was working at maxon, we noticed the small-medium sized booth (3x5m) opposite ours had nobody there setting up; so assumed they were late or perhaps that space hadn't been sold.
The next day rolls around and the show opens at 9am with this empty white shell stand still there. A couple of hours later some guy shows up and proceeds to start setting something up on the stand, but all he has with him is his laptop bag. To our entertainment he proceeds to take out a stack of A4 printed paper and a packet of blutack, then starts sticking up the paper on the back wall.
Each piece of paper is just a giant single letter. L I G H T W....

One thing they shouldn't do is offer a mark 1 iron man and not have them in when you show up for one.

REPOST:
NewTek Wants Your Help.
Calling all artists -
SIGGRAPH is coming. We want your LightWave 3D artwork, so that we may showcase the BEST as part of our DEMONSTRATION REEL. You guys have been doing great sending me your best artwork for the LightWave gallery, but now it’s time to step it up.
SEND ME EVERYTHING YOU HAVE.
MODELS, IMAGES, ANIMATIONS- anything you want (and have the permission to) show AT SIGGRAPH, arguably the biggest event of the year for people like us.
This is your chance to shine- for your peers to recognize your BEST work.
To get this amazing work to me:
Email me at lwgallery@newtek.com
In the subject line of that email should be the words: REEL IMPORTANT!!!
(copy and paste those words for best results)
What we are looking for is HI-RES, HIGH QUALITY clips and renders.
If you do not have a method for sending us large files via email, send us a link to your version online (e.g. vimeo or youtube) and after watching it we will send you instructions on how to get it to us.
WE WANT THESE SUBMISSIONS IMMEDIATELY- as in, yesterday. The SIGGRAPH event begins on JULY 25th. Preparations for our presentations have already begun, so the sooner we have your material, the better of a chance it will have to be a part of the festivities.
Cheers,
David

In two minds over this, part of me things, why can't Newtek get assets by themselves, the other is, the work the community does will probably outstrip anything Newtek pick so dunno.
I recall the LW9 community 'reel' put together by gracious users really shone compared to the stuff Newtek were demoing, so I can see the benefit.
Mind you, "we need it yesterday" does once again smack of Newtek failing to have things organised in sufficient time for Siggraph.
