Working in zbrush, really nice brushes to play around with there. Googled some turtle patterns and used with the brush alpha for the patterns on the face and the flippers. Gives a more realistic look.

Alot left but some progress

wow, really nicely done. What software did you use?
Michaelws

Are you asking me? If so...the answer is..the real old fashioned software...brushes, acrylic and canvas.
I have done a number of digital pieces using painter and photoshop...here is a link to a brewery that I have done digital labels for...beer labels.

And my website:

Just some shots of prints.
I like your turtle model. I was thinking of building a few turtles in max and Zbrush but have been too busy at the gallery doing old fashioned easel painting.

Michaelws: Alright, thats really cool. How nice to design beer labels :) Like your work on your site, great.
Ah thank you. Yeah you should do that. Your paintings would be perfect as a reference, seems like you have no problem to visualize them.
Ran into an annoying normal/bump map exporting/importing problem. Ive spent many hours the last days trying to get my normal map from zbrush to work with maya. Got kinda bad results, the normal map seems to be offset to the UVs and also the UV seams are really distinct. Finally I downloaded xnormal and got a decent result. If anyone know some tricks about this, ill be happy to listen.

Rendered out some layers in Maya and then composite an image in After Effects. Just a composition test. Alot of stuff left, now some beers.

Wow, that last update looks really awesome. Whatever technique you're using to give this an underwater vibe, it's absolutely working. Looking forward to seeing more

I really like what you're doing so far. You should do a small breakdown of how you are compositing if you get the chance. I'm sure others would be interested. I know you said you are using after effects.

razeverius & TiMrozek: thanks for the feedback!
I am actually doing a short animation of the sea turtle for a project. Thats why I composite the images in AE and not in PS. This mini challenge is the perfect boost to get my turtle modelled and good to go for animation. I will be more informative in the future :)

I´ve been really busy the last couple of weeks, anyway here´s an update. It´s getting there now I guess. Finished the flippers and more wrinkles. Oh yeah, I also used the turtle for a tracking assignment :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rinEwHe9kjE

This is looking really nice, Luke. May I ask how you tackled the scales on the fins? Did you use custom alphas, masks, stencils? I ask because it's looking so much better than mine and I would like to know your technique so I can improve.
Thanks in advance

rage: thanks man! Ive seen yours too, looks great. sea turtles are awesome :)
Hm, I created an alpha from photos of turtle flippers. After that I used the alpha for masking in zbrush.. hope that helps!

Indeed. I used custom alphas as both masks and brush alphas. The only issues I'm having is the large scales on the front of the flippers. Need to find a solid image for those. Thanks mate.
The alpha I made procedurally for the shell plates works very well, so feel free to grab it and use it to your heart's content. I posted it on my thread. Will save you a few minutes in ps, at the least.
Cheers.

rage: mm the skin on your turtle looks great. Hm yeah, maybe ill try using some alphas for the plates but im eventually going to have color textures so maybe to much detail there won´t do any difference.. I´ve found some nice materials for zb, really fun to play around with. :)
