Hello,

I have just recently started using Painter 8 and I had just a quick question. I'll do this buy example..

I have created a picture of say... a zombie (zombies rock!).. I drew him all on multiple layers, and now that he's finished, I have grouped the layers together. So now, in the layers menu, I have my white canvas. .and a group that contains like.. 20 layers. Now I want to add a background.

Whether I paint directly onto the canvas, or a layer behind my group.. it seems like the paint always interacts with any layers eather above or below it.. so When I draw in a black background behind the charecter, the black bleeds through over my picture. I have done some poking around, and have come to the loose conclusion that its because, since most the colors are all loose, shaded colors,.. they are semi-transparent, so when I paint behind it, it shows up in my image..

What Im wondering is if there is a way to in a sense.. compile a group of layers into one, plain layer that is basically like I just dropped a jpg onto the canvas, but still keep the transparency around the charecter.. so I can just scribble on a background, and not have to worry about it showing up on my drawing?

I could always just drop the whole thing onto the canvas and just cut out the image, but there should be an easier way.. In Photoshop, it was really easy to just keep the look of an image, but remove transparancy in certain areas..

One more relating question actually.. is there a way to stick layers together in Painter, like you would in photoshop with the merge layers button? It doesnt seem to be painfully obvious how to do this in painter, but it should be a simple task!

I have kinda developed an extreme love/hate relationship for painters layers.. I love how they interact together and such when it comes to layering painted layers, and having them pick up the colors, just like the traditional mediums would. .but there has to be a way to turn this damn function off!!

<fumes a bit>

but thank you in advance :)

P.S. Is it just me or does Painter 8's water colors feature kick alot of ass?? For the past 4 years I have painted classically with water colors pretty stricktly, and I must say that Painter 8 replicates the experience of water colors fairly well.. Well obviously not even close to the actual experience, it some how manages to come accross exactly the same.. hard to explain :) but bloody cool :)

Well, maybe I can add some help though I am not at home right now and cannot consult my Painter:

You can group layers together with the "Group" button at the layers palette. You select the layers with "Shift" and then apply the grouping.

You can decide wich part of the layer to keep opaque, transparent or semitransparent at any degree (page 253 of the manual). You apply a Layer Mask ("Create Layer Mask" button) which shows a grayscale image of your pic. The white parts are completely opaque, while black is completely transparente. Inbetween the grays show intermediate degrees of translucency.
You can paint in that mask with white, black or any gray, and with any brush to achieve fantastic effects, or just to show chosen parts of a layer.

I don't know if I have explained myself with my poor English, but if this is of any help I'll be pleased...

YES!! That totally worked :D I was looking at that mask thing, but could never really figure it out since I found it so poorly explained in all the help manuels and files.. For somebody with poor english, you manage to explain it better then the english speaking writers :) And your english is perfectly fine! I wouldnt even have assumed that english wasnt your primary language if you hadnt mentioned it. I think your spelling is probably better then mine :)

Thank you so much for your help...

Except for the groups thing.. I have the groups thing figured out. I was more wondering if there was a way that I could convert a group to layers.. so that it would be one entire image... or maybe there would just be no benifit to doing this, so they didnt even put in an option for it?...

You can merge multiple layers just like in Photoshop:

- select multiple layers
- put them in a group
- select collapse (2nd mouse button menu)
edit: apperantly the layers all need to be in the default mode for the collapse to work..

I've only been using painter for a few days now, so you get no warranty with this tip :)
