Cool.
It seems to have not really realistic movements......when the blu man hit the divan with the fist, the weight of the men on the divan.....
well....the general look is ok....but it seems to be a WIP....
do you interensted in improve it?

hey, that was good.
just a few crits:
why the left guy's ass is floating
there are a bit more stopmotions than necessary like when the right guy punches the sofa and i think is needed a bit more exaggeration
that was my pov  but above all great job!
PS: right guy needs to learn acting ;)
Hey John, very nice acting
Did you do this in messiah?

Yep, have to agree with previous posters. The hitting the divan part needs more work. Love the expression on the orange guy when he says, in a hushed voice, "His head fell off?"

That's great job, but it's too much pose to pose and it seems unfinished to me. Especially the left guy.
But anyway it's a great job.

I really like it.
I have to agree with the hitting of the sofa... but the hushed 'his head fell off' was hilarious. I love the expression on his face... good lipsynch technique there... the announcement from the blue guy that his head fell off could use a bit of lipsynch work...
other than that... I LOVE IT!
more!

hey i have to agree looking back on it now the lip sync is a bit out. The problem i find with max is that the open Gl is soooo slow compared to Messiah ;) but thats no excuse!
CuTnPaste: "do you interensted in improve it?" do you mean am I gonna improve it?
helpless: Pose to pose? How would you counter act this problem?
maks: Nah i used max for this, we are using max at work so i kinda go used to Max now. I find it really easy to work with man really quick to change timing. I haven't tryed Messuah Studio yet is it any good? Btw and Jeffo rendered it using max as well.
DoLeePoZ: it took 3 hours of my day. for 4 days after work. I don't get much time any mroe to do my own stuff too busy. But i thiough i need to keep doing my own stuff it's part of being an animator right?

BTW Jeffo was responable for all the morph targets and beautiful lighting and rendering :) and compositing. :)

Thank you

CuTnPaste: Well at the mo im really struggleing for time. And in fact i'm actually half way through an other acting piece I'll let you know about that very soon! It's about 16 secs long and is a audio clip from space balls. (excellent film if any one hasn't seen it). I'll take these errors to this next animation and make sure it's TOP Notch ;)
thanks

What was the last version you used for "The Race"? It's been a while since we saw you on the yahoo list the last time indeed...!
Well Animate and Studio have greatly evolved, especially since the last rev (studio rev 9b/animate 4b), and Studio 1.5 is about to be released. There are many enhancements, just have a look over at the messiah forum :)

There is something about the sound that doesn't match up. Could it be the fact that the voices are loud but these people are in a wide open space. I wonder if putting this scene into a box or adding some noise to the background sound would help it all match up.
The animation looks great although yeah I think when he hits the couch there could be more of a reaction to his fist hitting the couch. But I really like the Jim Carey with "his head fell off" bit

Great job! I agree about the floating guy and the punch, though. I don't think the audio supports the anger in the motion, anyway. perhaps, (if you decide to rework it) he should just shrug or look defeated.......

John-
Could you share some insight into a question. You say that you used morphs, do you keep the head a seperate object and do the lip sync/morphs, and then just use CS or bones to animate the rest of the character?
I'm just curious how you've done it because it seems like a smooth transition between the heads and bodies of the characters.
Thanks-
John Lee
09-11-2003, 03:54 PM
Lekku: yeah maybe's
mattregnier: nope the heads were not seperate. i know that adds to the slowness of the playback but still man i think Max is very slow to work with. :)
Jeffo asked to do a moph sheet. would you like to see one?

Yes I'm working on my first character in another thread, and I'm just learning how to handle the animation of the character and the animation of the mouth morph targets and could really benefit from some of your advice/examples... Currently I have the head as a seperate object and just created a bunch of morph targets. Should I be creating those morphs of the whole body?

Good start!
Here are a few thoughts I had while watching your animation:
I notice that you are not animating the character as a whole.
What I mean is that is you are being very static with separate parts of the character throughout the animation. For example when the blue guy lifts his arm to wipe his tears, the rest of his body [mainly the chest] is unaffected by this action. When he puts his arm back down to post himself after he wipes his tears away, there is no subtle weight shift. Forgetting to follow the action through to the other parts of the body is a common mistake, and one that hurts alot of " could be great" animations.
You also seem to be aggressive when going into poses, often lending the characters a "snap to pose" sort of timing. Work on the ease ins and outs.
The characters weight shift when he slides over is not accurate as well.
This is a great effort and I look forward to seeing more animation from you in the near future.

That's awesome mate! :D
WE GOT NO FOOD !!!!!!!!!
WE GOT NO JOB !!!!!!!!!!!
AND OUR PET HEADS ARE FALLING OF !!!!!!!!!!! :annoyed:
Man,
do all you head morphs.
then on top of the morpher modifier put an edit mesh, attach the body, weld the points and there you are...just skin or bone.
smooth transition, and very light morph.
btw baby modeling tip of the day... using same technique.
if you already have lot of facial morph, and need to make an important change which mean more vertices...
add the morpher, add all your shapes,
add edit mesh (plizz I want en edit poly), make you changes here.
then copy the object number of times you have facial morph, do the good morph for each of them...
collapse all...you've done your modeling change on you 10-20 facials objects once !!!!
nb : if change is big, you might need to tweak the new points little bit.

I like it. Good poses and good timing. The pose where the blue guy says, "His head fell off" is a little overdone because the audio doesn't give me the same impression as the anger in his body language. Other than that I wish there was more...good job

Some really nice work John!
Some really good acting, and nice subtle actions.
A possible way to counteract the pose to pose problem is by having more breakdown poses or actions inbetween your key poses.
(eg. rise off his cog in Y-translation slightly when he slides and then settles down into his final position instead of just having him translate from his initial pose directly to his next pose.
But overall nice work!

I think the animation is pretty damn good.
The characters however, i find them to be somewhat dull and unimaginative. When the characters don't appeal to me... i find that the whole piece suffers

Hey man,
Front page again!!! Soon they'll just reserve a place and call it the John Lee space!
No, seriously, well done mate. Excellent animation. I can see the improvement even from 3 months ago, it's astounding! Keep up the hard work, it's paying off, as we said it would. Who knows, we may be working together again soon!
Take care mate,
Dal.
P.S. How's your 'mate' doing? :p :applause: :applause:

Hey man,
Good stuff! Glad to see you found some time. Saw this on your website a few days ago, haven't been checking this forum enough. (Damn ISDN, back on broadband soon though!) You say you're using Max for this? How are you finding it? S'looking pretty good to me. :)
Take it easy,

Pretty cool overall, except him hitting the couch with his hand doesn't really do anything for the line "his head fell off". I'd have him do something less dramatic...
amnesicelephant: he actually said it himslef when posting the animation.

not sure if this has been mentioned already, but when he says "ah i'm sorry harry....what happened" there some stretching of the blendshape or something, doesn't look right.
But pretty cool animation, love it when the brown repeats his head fell off, great expression.

hey woody max is pretty slow compared to messiah but i find the tools alot better in max than in messiah. Over a very good for animating. for setting up characters it's pretty fast also!
