I'm thinking of throwing my hat into this comp with a few other buddies of mine. Since Tron had a huge impact on us, seems only fitting to pay homage.

Here's our final entry. I'm extremely proud of the work, effort and outcome from this team. Every one of them went far above and beyond.

None of this would have been possible if it wasn't for:

-Blake getting all the Environment modeled, lights setups and render passes taken care for Ed and Jon, all atop really ironing out the visual style of the piece.

-Ed massaging together so many elements, plates and pieces from so many sources for the final composite. Way to take what we had and crank it up to 11!

-Jon stepping in with a killer audio track, helping Ed out with post effect work, especially for the split at the end, and not to mention the title/end card sequences.

-Wayne rocking the 3d Vfx's for the shield, mist and shatters. Truly adds such a richness to the piece. So many details and layers, great job.

-Reed knocking out 2 character models, high res, textures all based off only the slightest concept and in record time. Really allowed time for look dev, rig work, and animation polish having those taken care of so quickly.

-Zach setting the stage and providing on helluva matte painting for Blake to base of the renders off and the rest of the team to really visualize the world.

To the entire team, fantastic job!

That looks great. I like the split into two part at the end.

I think that is an excellent idea for an entry.

Updated Animation (http://www.3dfiggins.com/gallery.php?id=39&item=232#232)

Hey guys, heres an updated anim:
-more intentional camera
-close up on entry for female character. Was thinking some reflections in the visor or under lighting zipping by could really be cool
-because rings play such a heavy part in the tron world, i added in a slew of animated torus for vfx
-really amped up the intensity of the vfx, going over the top is think is a good thing
-mild rig updates (fingers/bind)
-more disk movement on female entry

Still have a lot to do, and a few more motions to put in there, will be chipping away at it nightly.

Trails: MOVIE (http://www.3dfiggins.com/tronBattle/VFX/0429_tronBattle_VFX_trails_rd_A_WEB.mov)
-this is only phase one of many, but should be pretty sweet when alls said and done

So, with that in mind heres the weekend updates:
-Animation revision, still a heavy wip, but getting there
-Env proxy creation, see if we need matte painting or are going to go 3d
-Female Wip model by Reed
-Various VFX and trail tests following up on the earlier tech post

A hefty Update!
-Blake Guest: (http://www.blakeguest.com/) rocked the initial pass for the environment, lighting and look dev. Nice!
- Reed Case (http://www.cruxko.com/)y continues to pump out character models, showing the first blocking of the Blue Warrior.
-Tron Team grows to include 2 more artist:
- Zach Christian (http://www.digitalfxrealm.blogspot.com/) rocking the matte paintings.
- Wayne Hollingsworth (http://www.waynart.com/) taking up the cup of 3d vfx, smoke, particles and such.

Current Stage of Anim (Still a heavy wip):

Very cool! The animation looks really nice. The only thing that caught my eye was the flip at the end, the character hangs in the handstand position for what seems like a slightly longer time than I might expect. But still really cool!

Albers
05-10-2010, 07:08 PM
This is going to be epic man. The initial lead-in with the speeding girl is awesome, feels balanced and fast, and the initial clash is awesome. It kinda feels like the blue guy should be knocked back a little bit more, or maybe slides a bit more, but it's a probably a matter of personal taste at this point. Great feel to this, the shield throw is fantastic, I like how the shield essentially builds itself out of the arm :).

grantmoore3d
05-10-2010, 09:42 PM
Wow, that looks fantastic, I really like the style you have thus far. I know it's just roughed in at the moment but I would have to second the back-flip... when she lands it is so quick that I had to watch it a few times to even figure out what happened followed by something to slow.

Also, perhaps it's a little too dark? I had a hard time making out what I was watching, though that's purely a stylistic choice.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback!

KayPoprawe: Thanks man! The week nights are bit harder to produce after work, I'm sure you and yoru team know that tale all to well.

Mustan: We hope this turns out well to, so far so good.

Jim: Yea, the hand its a bit long for sure. I typically wouldnt make this stage of my animation process open for the public as I'm not constantly working on it, makes for responding to feedback pretty limited. Will take note on the hand stand when I go back and block in the rest of the shot

Albers: The Mighty Albers stop on by! Thanks for dropping a kind word man, much appreciated. Yea, the blue guy is gonna get plummled for sure once i block in his new animation. Good eye.

Grant: Yep, will address that back spring for sure. As for the darkness, thats only the beauty pass and the characters have no textures, and no vfx, so once those all make an apperance, i'm sure the scene will bright and contrast will increase.

Grak: Thanks man, stooked to see what you rock out as well!

Thanks again guys, more updates in just a few days.

Jeremydjutras
05-17-2010, 02:14 PM
Kiel,
This is turning out to be one killer project. Like the way you are handling the effects. Is it mostly animated translucent geometry?

On to the animation. I think you could improve the red's landing (after the backflip). I notice her legs are bending 3 frames before impact here, I would like to see them stretch out as if searching for solid ground and then a heavy 2 frame squash/bend for the weight. After this pose, I see that you have her falling to her back then transitioning into a back handspring. It looks a bit off seeing her fall so hard then raising up so slowly. Wonder if you should adjust some timing here.

Also earlier, when she goes from riding on the discs to flying in the air (I love this action, the animal/athletic power behind it) she vaults off her hands and into the kick, I wonder if you should have feet contact as well as pushing off with the hands, maybe two or so frames later and a bit of stretch to the legs? Not sure, she does have a lot of momentum carrying her through so maybe the arm contacts are just there to help her change into the kick position not to propel her forward. What were your intentions on this section?

Just my thoughts, you have me excited to see the final version.

http://www.3dfiggins.com/tronBattle/Images/0517_matteTest.jpg (http://www.3dfiggins.com/tronBattle/Images/0517_matteTest.jpg)

DarthViper: Thanks man, once all the Lighting and vfx take over for that Split, it should really sing!

JJ: Thanks, this one's really shaping up. All the vfx that you see so far are hand keyed. I dont expect any will make it into the final renders, as they're more place holder for the VFX artist to see what needs to be done, timing and framing. I agree with both anim crits, and they will be addressed. I typically don't host up my anims for feedback when I have such limited time to work and gaps between posts. The animation you see is really really rough : ) I've started cleaning it up the driving tonight and will be doing a bit each night over the next 2 weeks. As for the legs planting as well during the dive, i did a blocking of that a while back and didnt like the time it took or that she'd really have to kick her legs forward again for the kick against the shield. We'll see if i can pull it off to read well.

KayPopRawe: Bummer man, you had a great entry. You should still be really excited about what you've done! Looking foward to seeing more of your work in the future.

I saw that you had a hand in the Azureus Rising short, do you plan on putting any of your work from that on your website? If so it would be awesome to see the rig animation and your shots close up. Love to see the "behind the scenes" of animation.
The Azureus website doesn't look like they will do that much behind the scenes for animation.
