Here is my first attempt at a Challenge here on CG Talk. I'm not new to 3D but I am pretty new to Lightwave and I'm still trying to learn, so any suggestions you have please throw them out, thanks!!

I like your lighting and color scheme...but what is that funnel-shaped thing on the right?

Here's another view.

The strange object in the middle is the "home" of whatever creature will live there and the stairs on top lead up to a lookout tower over the forest. The home will be suspended from the trees by lots of vines and things because the floor of the forest is all marshy swampland, and full of many spooky creatures. If I have time I might add some sort of raft or boat at the base and a "Blimp-Type" flying machine on the roof, kind of like a helipad. Anyway, please let me know what you think and offer out any suggestions, thanks.

Does anyone out there have any comments for me? Any Questions? Suggestions?:wavey:

OK, I see it now. It was hard to tell from that low camera angle.

For the background I'd add in some very basic tree shiloettes(sp) that can cast shadows in that fog. I still like the fogginess and lighting to the scene.

Here is a new view, if anyone out there is really looking? I'm having trouble figuring out the glow option in the shader for the windows. I've put it up to %500 without any effect, am I missing something obvious? Please reply!! thanks...

what about giving the windows a transparency mask and putting an omni inside the building?

Great work so far. The concept is very great! I like the lighting you have but I think there should be a little more ambient light so we can see *some* of the shadowed details better......if that makes sense. ;) Keep it up buddy.

Hmm...I really like the first 2 actually. I would try to get the lighting back to that. I really like the minimalist look in those, too...they look like paintings.

Looking forward to more.

Here's another slight update, still playing around with the lighting. I might start modeling a little "swamp boat" by the door and a blimp vehicle on the roof...any ideas or comments out there? :wavey:

I'd have to agree with pearson, I really liked the old lighting better to, had much more depth and personality. I'm also not quite sure about that new texture you're using for the main house structure? I don't know that it goes with your color scheme, but maybe as you continue to work it will tie back in better? Looking good so far, especially with the late start! Wish I would have joined in on this one too, maybe next contest, depending on my schedule and the theme. Hard to stay in when you get off work and it's finally nice out!

Keep dem' coming!

Yep, i agree with the guys, the lighting in the first 2 images is much more effective. In combination with the angle of view, gives a real atmospheric image :)

Here's another update, not sure if the lighting's getting better or worse? Too many test renders...let me know what you think....

Hi,
I like the latest lighting best but with the second to lasts texture on the building.

I like the back-lighting in that last picture, except for the "lava" looking texture in the center. Also the texture on the dwelling needs to be much darker. Try using the texture in the second to last pic with the lighitng from the last pic. The only other thing I would recomend right now is to work on the reflection on the water. Are you using a bump map for the waves on the surfave of the water? If so try changing it to a displacement map. That will cause the raytraced reflection to be broken up by the waves and ripples. With it just being a bump map the raytracing is computed like the water is flat.

Here's another update with some little fairies and a new lantern on the boat...what do you all think?

Zro--i agree on the dwelling texture-I went back to dark, but I'm not sure how to do a displacement map in lightwave, can anyone help me with that?:hmm:

Zro-
Thanks for the compliment!

I'll admit my stupidity...I just realized that I had most of the Raytrace options turned off....I'm still learning Lightwave and I keep having these somewhat frustrating little mishaps...oh well...thanks again!!

I really like your cool, almost milky quality to the water, it adds a lots of sparkle and life to the piece.

Keep it up!:bounce:

Hi all, can I please get some more comments/critiques/ideas, the challenge is almost over and I feel that my image is so "unfinished". I'd like to add a few things to top it off-helpful, imagination-sparking ideas are welcome!!:D

I like your image alot. It has a subterranian feel to it. The only suggestions I have are to add a bit more to the textures in areas. If it is a subterranian forest, maybe hint to cave walls in the background and add some stalagmatites (sp?).

The lights at the bottom (near the boat) look like a pair of big eyes staring out. It's kinda distracting in scale and style from the rest of the piece.

Maybe add some moss or green stuff hanging off the top and attached to the trees? Glowing mushrooms maybe? I dunno ... it looks pretty good, but does need a little more to add to the enchantment.

Good luck!

Thanks kirt for the comments and ideas!

What I think I'm going to try to do is add in the vines that the home is supposed to be suspended from and dangle some moss and messy stuff from the vines and the bridge and maybe the bottom of the trees. If I have time I want to add a hunched old wizard with a cloak and staff in the boat, and maybe one or two "mysterious" creatures in the foggy water and air. Who knows, if I feel ambitious and people seem interested I might try to finish the piece after the challenge, since this is my first real Lightwave project I almost feel required to finish it to some degree.

Any other comments/suggestions/ideas are totally welcome....really...anyone out the looking.....please type a few words to give me some feedback!!

thanks.

here's the other, the glow on the vines---good or bad?

ZrO-1

Nah, no glow on the vines. They look much better without it. I like the wizard you added in the boat.

i love this piece...... except that i'd recommend to reverse the direction of the foremost vine.

it covers the walkway from tree to pod (?) ... and if reversed it would set up conflict with/ and compliment the walkway.

Good idea Gwelty, I noticed that after the last render...the openGL preview is so dark that I can't really see the vines well until I render, thanks for noticing. I think I'm going to add more vines and try to add some stringy, mossy stuff hanging from them. Also, I'm going to try to add in some "unusual" plant life at the base of the trees and possibly a railing on that twisty thing on the roots so that there is an entrance into the tree. I think I need to scale down the wizard and the boat also, what do you all think?

Also, I'm trying to think of something to add to the dwelling to separate it from the trees a little more, ideas?

Wow Oz, thanks for the great compliment, I wasn't expecting that-thanks!

Does anyone have some comments on what could be better or improved?

I'm trying to find time to add things but time is running out. If I can get my flowers and vegitation done tomorrow, Ill try to get a final render up, although I think I might do more to this piece after the challenge. Again, if anyone has criticisms, please don't be shy--I would like to know how to improve, thanks.
