How useful/common is to paint with vertex color?

According to the tutorials of max5 Vertex Color is used by video game real-time renderers to tint 3D models.
However, it also says that in general, if you’re going to render inside 3ds max, it's not a good idea to use vertex color as a substitute for a material.

What do you guys think?
I'd like to hear opinions.

thanks,

DPC

I agree with the doc. Used quite often in game dev. Almost never used in renders, mostly because it's too low in resolution.

People have talked about it for rendering, on the Discreet forum, I didn't pay much attention though. Maybe search there?

I've used it few times it to paint some masks for dirt maps. Works quite well but your mesh has to be quite dense or it looks really crap. Give it a try!
