View Full Version : RGB numbers for lighting
Sokowa 09-11-2003, 12:15 AM I'm using Max and radiosity to light a few of my scenes. I was just wondering if people have and favorite red/green/blue setting they start out with for outdoor nightime scenes, sunsets, etc.
Thanks!

My favorite way is to grab colors from the background plate if there is one, or from a reference image that has colors and tones I like.
If your work is all-CG and you don't have reference images, then grab a copy of this chart and pick colors off it:

It's explained a bit here:

Third thing, if you are using radiosity, remember it picks up colors from your surfaces (even the ones that are off-screen) in your bouncing light, so the surface colors will change your light colors as well.

Excellent. Thank you very much. Yes, I do indeed use radiosity. I know there are so many variables but this'll be a great chart to have!
Thanks again.

This is great, thank you!
And, if you do not use any radiosity, do you just add together this color with the color of the ground for your bounce ight? Or do you just yse ground color, not color temperature color, if you know what I mean?

I think I know what you mean. If you have a background plate, picking colors straight off that for ground bounce is fine, that includes lightsource color and ground color already together. If you are looking at a colored surface, you _multiply_ the light color by the surface color (with colors on a 0-1 scale, so multiply brings values lower) to get the correct color for the bounce light - is that what you mean?
