nottoshabi 09-10-2003, 09:04 PM I have exported skin weights. Opened them up in photoshop enhanced the image, saved and imported the skins back to Maya.
The reasult incresed my file size from 21 megs to 350 megs. :surprised
Dont know Y but thats a verry big problem....:annoyed:

A few reasens i could think of:
- Compression
- Bitdepth of you image
Although these factors de normaly not have that huge effects on filezises.
What file extension does the image have?

I'm using JPEG format. And I have just tried it on exporting the maps and then importing them right back in to the same model with no alterations on the JPEG's. And Maya crashed, so I thinck it does the same thing.

Have you tried using an iff or a Tiff? I've never had troubles with altering the weights.
besides, Maya and jpg's dont always get along. TGA, TIFF and IFF are the way to go.
.sgi is also ok

Yes I did just try again in IFF and it crashed again. Do you guys remember how many maps you had? Cause I have 486 and I thinck thats the porblem. Cause Maya says its low on vertual memory, and then crashes.

I think I had about 60-100.
Im not sure what the problem could be though... Maybe ask in the MEL forum if they could create a script that breaks the calculation down into smaller memory chunks.
Instead of importing the skin weights via the menu, maybe try doing it on a map by map basis for each bone. I forget how to do this though.
The MEL would be something like:
Import map1
normalize weights
import map 2
normalize weights
as opposed to the method maya currenty uses:
Import map 1
import map 2
import map 3...
normalize weights.
I have NO idea if this helps. I know maya doesnt use image files internally to determine weight maps, its just for user interface (Paints weights tool) and the handy import/export feature.
:blush:

Yeah but that wont get the file size down. Even if I can import all the skins back on the model. With a file size of 350 megs there is nothing I can do with that file. Well what I will try doing is dividing the model in 3 different parts and then try the process again. Hope this time it works.
