Hi,

I'm trying to teach myself gi in xsi (I've already read the nice little tutorial by Ed Harriss). I have a problem with my scene and no idea how to fix it...

I'm using final gathering, high quality settings, and as you can see there's a strange unnatural rim of light at the edge of the stairs. There's a small gap between the stairs and the wall but even if I make the objects overlap or if I make the gap bigger it doesn't really solve the problem. The light is just a spot light with a shadow map. Looks almost like there's light leaking through from below, but of course there isn't any light from below...

Any ideas...?

It could be a couple of things causing that light bleed. If you're using a phong material on either the wall or the stairs, replace it with a blinn. Also, go into the material properties for each and in the indirect illumination section turn the radience down a dark grey. You may have to up the intensity of your lights after this, but it will stop that bleeding from happening.

There are other factors as well.

First, make sure the light exponents are set to 2.
Then, if you use final gathering, make the radiuses are very small.
Finally, make sure the objects don't have too much specular.
