Title: Kumu, Art Museum of Estonia
Name: Viktor Fretyán
Country: Hungary
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

This is a project I have been working on for a while now. I love this building very much and I always wanted to do it in 3d.

I owe a huge thank for Samuel Gwynn and Ankit Surti who provided a model for me when I started. And although later on literally every element was remodelled since I wanted everything to be as detailed as possible it was still a huge help and I couldn't have done this without them.

Instead of making one scene and taking more shots I wanted to make every scene to be individual.

Thank you for viewing and let me know what you think!

stunning. amazing.

The compositions are flawless. I especially like the exterior shot where the contrails mimic the curve of the building--very poetic, and restrained enough so that it doesn't feel over-illustrated.

thanks for sharing!

I'm not a fun of this type of pictures, but these are beautiful!
I love the best the middle-right image, where the plane's line is passing with the building.

Really GREAT Project.

But strange angle of the images #1,4,6,10 ,very sharp thin edge around the BD corner.

Since some interior spaces extended in the scene, otherwise the camera view should be adjusted shift some.

Thanks for sharing such PICS.

certainly impresive work. grats. modelling, texturing, ligthing, vegetation, etc..all is just amazing.

got a question, the snow in pic 1, if you did modelled and rendered or it was done in ps? I have to say that I have never seeign 3d snow like that ever!.

??? the snow has ski marks & stuff! it is on the top of your architecture & on the forest ground. how did you make the ski marks?, afterwards?...never heard about someone using a hard wax mat then making a texture & appllied using a uwv map.... ????!!

I'd certainly give my rigth hand to know how you modelled the snow...realy.

Longing to see your answer. if positive I would suggest you to make a turorial, I would even pay for it.

hey m8, how are you, jonnybravo from maxforums here, we're missing you over there :))

Let me tell you, seeing your work in the cgchoice gallery made my heart smile, your work is simply spectacular and i think you're one of the best out there. If it were up to me, all of your projects would have been in the cgchoice gallery and on the frontpage because they fully deserve it. Your an inspiration, seeing your work makes me push harder on my projects. Flawless jawdroping work, words cannot describe it. Much like EricSosa said, you shold start a series of tutorials, i'd be willing to pay an arm and a leg just to get some insight in to your workflow. Once again, great work, just....spectacular. If i could i'd spend a whole day just rating this thread non stop with 5 stars. Great job m8, great job... Rock on :buttrock:

Being an estonian myself and having been to KUMU quite a lot of times, i must say that before seeing the unshaded renders i was looking really hard to find proof this was actually 3D. Honestly, one of my favourite arch viz images/compositions out there.

The building and its peculiar design has spawned quite a lot of controversy among estonias. They should just see your renders to truly appreciate the beauty of the structure and take note that it is the subject of such an amazing 3d project. So, kudos.

Fantastic work, as usual. Modeling itself is quite casual but i must say that i love your work with colours. You only play with levels? Do you use LWF?

Take care

hey Simon,

i use more layers to achieve the best results in color balance. one layer has all the warm colors and another layer has very cool bluish cyan color tones. i have more layers. one is very exposed and one is a bit dull and blend them all together in the right amount.

and yes i only do it by playing with the levels: shadoww highlights, color balance, exposure control. and no i dont use lwf. gamma on 1.0 and rendered with a single standard camera. linear exposure whenever i can. sometimes i had to switch to reinhard.

Amazing work Viktor, you truly are an inspiration to all of us archvis guys. The snow is astounding, I look forward to seeing how you achieved that. Interesting that you do not use a linear work flow and I would be interested to hear why you prefer 1.0 gamma.

thank you for your positive feedback again!

y 1.0 gamma? hmmm i dont really know. but LWF never worked for me. in the end it just didnt turn out better! i tried using it and i never felt that now im making nicer renders at all! i felt it totally useless...

i know i know i read all about it too how better it is and how correct it is but i dont know... didnt work out for me...

the snow is 2d displacement with a hard wax material. i describe it further more in a tutorial on evermotion. it will be coming out these days.
