View Full Version : HMC #25 Giant Isopod Diorama
japetus 04-19-2010, 07:17 PM I'll be doing the creature that gives me nightmares: The Giant Isopod (Bathynomus giganteus). This type of isopod can become 2 feet long!

While you contemplate the creepiness of them, you can listen to songs about isopods!

Think I'm gonna have some nightmares too!
Just look at those creepy legs and eyes!
Can't wait to see how it will turn out.

WTF! That's real? At first I thought it was a dust mite or head lice. This both rules and is terrifying. I must look up more about them. Good choice.

I was going to do this bad boy, but I don't think I could look at him for the period needed to finish it without crying.

Indeed they are all too real!! Apparently in some areas of south east Asia seafood joints they are cooked, sliced in half and served. Texture and taste are similar to crab it seems.

Hey awesome one Japetus.
There was this really huge one they found not that long ago. It hitched a ride on a deep sea unmanned sub on its way back to the surface.
Can't wait to see this, Japetus. Man, our oceans are host to really bizarre things.

I know, that's what got my attention with these things. I was like holy crap! My worst nightmare!

Worst nightmare indeed, but I have to admit that, being from Baltimore, if they taste like crab I guess I have to say I would eat one if given the opportunity.

In motion. The music sucks but the first section of the vid is great reference.

Quick update. Been working on the front legs. The other legs will be similar with some tweaking as they go down the body. I threw a quick rig onto them to pose them a bit more.

Hey really nice work so far Japetus. That render gives it a lot of character, even at this early stage. Great job. Love the legs.
Haha "spawn more overlords!" Hell ya!

nice choice, looks otherworldly with those shiny silver eyes. What's your plan for the diorama? Surf and Turf platter perhaps?

Here are some render upates. I added his rows of legs down the side and will be sizing/modifying later. Also worked on the face a lot and the underside parts. Overall I'm pleased! I'll be doing as much poly modeling as possible and then taking him into zbrush for the final stuff if I have time. I always get bogged down using zbrush so I try to avoid it as much as possibile ;). bad, I know! Right clck and view it to see a slightly larger one...

Wow.
3 months ago I moved to a houseboat in an effort to get over acute aquaphobia.
Thank you for undoing all of my progress.
Back to land living for me!

Took a bit of a break to work on some other side projects. I'll try to get back to this later in the week. I'm feeling pretty good about it overall, but the head needs some more work!

Thanks Rage! I took a little break from it because I had made so much progress so quickly, but I'm slowly working on it again. Just not much progress to post yet, I'm also sort of working on the Syd Mead project and another personal project concurrently as well as being busy. I'm really wanting to finish this one up!

Finally an update! been working on the head a lot, it's the most difficult part. Hard to get views of a few important angles, but I think what I"m doing will be good enough. Don't know yet if I'll bring anything into zbrush...you can right click and view the image larger if you want...

That's really cool. I like your techniques, with all the different geometry you used. And your poly economy is pretty cool too. Really effective mesh. Can you show us a render at this point?

A quick render of the head... not much else on the body has changed, but I'll try to get something in a bit.

Here are a few more views of the isopod. I've been working on connecting the bottom areas together and worked to define the head still more. Also got some wire frames in here...http://www.japetusproductions.com/Images/CGTalk/HMC_25/isopod_views.jpg

Looking good. The details look nice. I think it looks a little flat, vertically, compared to the ref though. In that front view it seems almost circular in cross section.

Well the deadline is almost upon us! I've decided I've modeled about as much as I can and I'm starting to pose this bad boy. I set up a rig for him and i'm moving stuff around. Here's a very rough screenshot, i want him pulling up onto something so you can see the detail underneath. Don't know yet how basic I'm going to keep it, but would like to have something in there for scale too. We shall see...
