View Full Version : Tiff vs rendering
Hi,
A newbie question. I'm going to be bringing 3d characters into a scene in a compositing programme by importing them as a tiff file from the 3d programme. How will the quality of the characters compare to the other option: taking them to another 3d programme through fbx export and rendering in that programme (Maya, Max, etc) before bringing them into the compositing programme?

PS. I know I won't get z-depth info. I'm just concerned about the quality of the character image.

If you use an uncompressed Tiff format the image quality should be as good as your 3D app can generate (you will get no image degradation). However making a composite look good takes a lot of attention to detail.
If you bring the model into another 3D app then the scene will look well integrated (since it IS integrated). But I dont know how much informaiton will you loose on the translation.

Hi,
I don't actually have a 3d rendering option so what I'm doing is going from wings 3d to Motionbuilder to Combustion where I'll be integrating an animated character with live action or a digital still image. Thanks for the feedback.

It's a common superstition among artists, that compression=lossy. ;)
In fact, JPEG is the only compression scheme supported by TIFF which is lossy, all others aren't.
You are strongly advised to use at least LZW compression, better ZIP, if your target app can read it.
The plain reason being that it will save space and decrease HD to RAM transfer time. The time needed to decompress the frame, once in memory, is negligible compared to the savings in disk transfer time that are archieved through the use of compression.
