I'm just going to follow up on this and say that I found a work around. My setup has a pf source acting as the main particle movement. These particles were baked into geometry spheres which were then used to constrain another pf source within. Those particles were used for the blobmesh. And since I'm not realizing I don't need the shape to shift and move, I've collapsed the blobmesh and detached the shapes into objects, linked them back to the original particle movement.
I hope that wasn't too confusing.
