View Full Version : Female head - my sister
So, this is my very first thread here at cgtalk... A little nervous, yes! Anyways, this is my first attempt at creating a realistic human head in Maya, a model of my sister.
Up until now I mostly tried to get a nice mesh, and I will now begin adding detail and shaping it better. So, what do you think about the mesh? And do you have any expert advice for me to bring on this long and rough road? :) I know it doesn't really look like her yet, as I said I just began shaping it, but please help me find what's wrong!

oh, one more thing, she has rather high and markes cheekbones and a little dip on the side, try to pull the mesh upp a bit on the sides and it will be easier to shape the cheeks later on :)
Qute sister btw :p
Alice! You're everywhere ;) Yep, you're right. thanks a lot!
I suggest you define the centre top lip and tighten the chin, make it shorter from the bottom. also review her jawline; bring out a little bit more about the height of her mouth. You might want to ask her to pull her hair back while you get a shot of her ear. Also if you're having trouble identifing anything else that is wrong make up a low poly mesh of her hair; modelled people always look strange to me with no hair. nice work so far :)

Thanks Jet, I'll work on that. Gotta do something about the cheeks... And mouth... And add detail to the eyes. A lot of work, I love it! :D
Btw, please don't comment the hair it's just temporary ;)

You need a slightly deeper gap right under the nose (the part above the upper lip, I have no clue what it's called)
Also, if you look at the right below the bottom lip, near the outter edge, you'll see a slight buldge on both sides.
Other then that, it looks very good.
Thank you sniffer, I'll look into that! Why do I get so few replys... Come on I need help here ;) I know there are amazing modelers around this forum can't you please give me some advice?

Some questions:
What techniques do you have for creating eyelashes? (When the model is going to be animated) And what about long hair?
Does anyone know of a good tutorial on texturing a face using photographs?
Using Maya 5 btw!

for the eyelashes i'd model the geometry and the rest is done in texturing. you know the transparancy ..
you could attach the eyelashes to the model after finishing all the work so you can make deformations for animation.
hope it helps.
but nice job man :)
