View Full Version : Why planar trim does not work on some curves?
Why does surface->planar->planar trim gives me this error when I try to create a plane or surface from the selected isoparm or curve? The curve is create in 2 attached curve segment - the rectangular part and the circular parts.
Here is the following error:
Error: planarTrimSurface14 (Planar Trim Surface Node): failed to compute the result.
Please see attachment.
Thanks.

Mod,
Can you remove the duplicate posts - it was accidental submissions.
Thanks.

Planar will only work on a closed surface. If your geometry still has history on it try deleting it using the Hypergraph, that's usually thourow enough. You can also export the itam into a new scene but clck off history in the option box for what to export with the geometry.
Thanks for the reply. But the curve is a closed curve, and deleting history on the objects or exporting the objects without history still do not create a planar surface for me.

budge it in space just a squidge.. its spatial tolerance thing. i remember a case where i budged a crv, litterally, a quadrillionth of a unit, and back popped the trim.
Wrend, budging the curve does not work for me.
There was another response by another user whose name I cannot remember on the post by the same title "Why planar trim does not work on some curves?" But because it was a duplicate post as this one, it was, I think the mods deleted it.
If you read this post, can you post that potential solution again?
Thanks.

Thanks.

post the geometry as a .ma file (4.5 preferably for me).

About planar limitations :
- Although the boundary of a planar surface can be manipulated to change the shape of the surface, the surface must remain planar at all times.
- Although a planar surface can include cut-out areas or holes, the curves that define the holes must be co-planar with the main surface.
:)
I recreate the curves again and now it works. I have to delete the histories, as Annie originally suggested, of each curve before attaching. What I did before was delete the histories of the curve after attaching.
However, I still would like to know why my originally attempt did not work, when there's no longer any histories for the object hanging around. Here is the simple scene file (m5.mb) in my yahoo briefcase directory Work. I don't know how to export it to maya 4.5:
Go to briefcase.yahoo.com

save it as a .ma file, mayaAscii. you just edit the header to export 'down'.
ok, I also put m5.ma in the briefcase in the Work folder.

yeah, the points wernt co-planar, the first thing you check (funnily enough), then that it is indeed closed, then try budging it about (certain crvs act this way, esp prone are ones w 'CV multiplicity').
What is the quickest solution to make that object planar and therefore, planar trimmed-happy, given its current state?

snap it to the grid or another curve in the side view for example.
atzfratz,
Snapping to points or curve is only good for small number of points. But I have 60 points to snap on each side = 120 points. And I will lose the correct dimension and have to readjust it in the process anyway even if I snapped those 120 points individually.
Is there away to snap it to another rectangle plane with all the curves and dimensions intact after snapping?

you could first click on one of the arrows of the manipulator so it gets yellow. Than just Press c, or v key or whatever the hotkey is for snap to curve and hold it while you press the middle mouse button on the curve you want to snap to. Otherwise there is an option to keep the spacing between points in the tool option for mowing. just hold w key pressed and leftmousebutton click in the interface to open a markinmenu for move options.
