i dont get it. i went on softimage.com and was loking at prices and there were multiple packages. one was 3000 on was 1500 and there was 1 other for 19.99!!!!. so my question is how good is the 19.99 dollar one and is it a actual 3d program or a plug in package or something....

I know their site is a bit confusing...

Softimage|3D is the predecessor to XSI... it comes in two versions.

Base $1,495
Extreme $2,495

Softimage|XSI is the state-of-the-art app and it comes in four versions.

Essentials - Worstation
Essentials - Enterpise
Advanced - Workstation
Advanced - Enterprise

These prices are not actually listed as you would normally contact a regional rep for site pricing. But the workstation pricing is something like this:

Essentials $7,000
Advanced $12,000

The $19.99 version is probably how much SI would charge to ship you a CD copy of the free EXP version which is basically a trial version of XSI. It works forever, but has limitations.

im using lightwave now but want to expand. how good is the free program. like is it limited to the point of no use or is it only lacking uncommon tools. wat i meen is does it liek only have the basics and then stop or is it a well rounded program.

XSI EXP is a fully-working copy of XSI Essentials, no tools are missing. The only caveats are the maximum res for rendering (under 640x480) and a watermark. However, the watermark is not very obtrusive. It also saves in it's own native file format.

the other thing is that you can't change the key mapping but not really a major problem

Read the limitations of the EXP packages on Softimage website. For purposes of learning, there is nothing to bother about :buttrock:

Bwaaahahahaha!! Is Softimage soft on the wallet?! Hail nawl!! At a delicious $12,000, it’s one of the most expensive programs on the market, just below the $17,000 Houdini [the lord of FX animation]. If you want to create POWERFUL, HIGHEND, PROFESSIONAL CG, Softimage is worth every penny. But if you're not looking for a monster program, but still would like to do quality work, I would go with 3D Studio Max. I've seen a lot of good work done here through that program. However, before you purchase anything, do as much research as humanly possible on all of the 3D animation packages.
