View Full Version : Anime hair
I'm working on this anime like character and I've been trying to get some decent hair with splines. But apart from the fact that it's pretty labor intensive to cover the whole head, I'm afraid it will become way to heavy...
I don't think 2d-planes will get the look I'm shooting for.
Any suggestions on how I can do this?
BTW would Solid Spline Pro be of any help here? I mean for placing the hairs across the head. I remember some impressive examples of that plug.
Thanks,

I think if I were you I'd use regular geometry, not splines. Maybe some matrix extrudes in various places along the back, and a few manually set series of extrudes to give the front that "small to big" row of spikes they all seem to have. But not splines...
(If you've got r8 I guess this would also be a good place to use soft bones, though I don't really quite understand them myself yet.)
Gonna use a cel shader?

instead of modelling individual strands why not model the actual hairstyle shape kinda low poly like...then just a case of texture.
of course this depends what manga style you go for and whether you intend to animate it?

this is what i mean...check pic out.
but they go on to use shag hair..but the top image shows you what i mean...by model style..rather than strands

I'm making an anime character too at the moment and I'm modeling the hair with HN's.
Cool, thanks for that tut flingster, that's the look I wanted. I already tried a bit with extruding sections from the head but it's actually way harder than I expected it to be. I guess that tut will get me on my way.
Thanks all...

kirl i don't think the tut will help ya much with the hair...as its for shag hair...but it was the picture of the modelled character is was refering to and her hair style...eg modelled...
take a look at MJV's avatar pic...gives you an example of modelling the hair...as opposed to bald head and plonking some shave stuff on it....or the route you've been trying by splines.
i'm sure there are some tuts out there somewhere...probably on low poly modelling sites which might help you in this area...good look bud...and post your results.
maybe MJV can give you some tips:shrug:
There is also a tut on modeling the hair.

Unfortunaly even though Cinema now has edge extrude I can't extrude the edges like in the tut. They use a plane but I'll just use a cube and start from there...

hey well spotted bud...didn't think he did a poly version of hair..very cool.
this can totally be done in c4d...poly model it...
if not you could always have a mess about maybe with a bezier nurb plane...let us know how you get on bud...got my interest now..:buttrock:

yup your right..just spotted a 5sided poly there...but easy enough to adapt bud...
Here's one I've been messing with using Hair Department generated splines and Solid Spline Pro. I think some of the earier posts might suit you better but hey, may as well toss it all into the arena :)

It's a shame Cinema can't extrude edges like that (while having edge selection & extrude tools), I think that way (like in the tut) is more logical than the strange sortof bevel Cinema creates...
I never actually used edge extrude, though the weighting is pretty cool...
Nice hairs Boxy, but like you said it doesn't really suit my needs ATM...
